We take pride in being a university that conducts ground-breaking research to confront the challenges of tomorrow – and academics from our Surveying MSc course are proving this.

A number of tutors from our Building Surveying Masters programme have been leading the way in Building Information Modelling (BIM); a 3D modelling process that gives professionals the insight and tools needed to efficiently plan, design, construct and manage buildings and their infrastructure.

In collaboration with Ryder Architecture and i2C Architects, some of our academics, including James Charlton and Kenneth Kelly, have co-founded The BIM Academy, designed to help the real estate and infrastructure sectors apply smart processes and technologies.

The Academy recently worked on the Smart Connected Buildings project, successfully integrating building design information, sensor data and user feedback to produce alerts/advice to builders and property owners on issues, such as room temperature and CO2 and energy usage early, so they could reduce their impact.

With research such as this, we hope the UK can become the world's centre of excellence for digital engineering and transformation – with Northumbria University at the forefront.
