What will I learn on this module?
This module provides you with an understanding of the biochemical principles of exercise metabolism. You will first gain advanced knowledge of the pathways involved in energy metabolism at rest, as well as during and post exercise. Building on this knowledge, you will gain an appreciation of how manipulating variables within exercise and nutrition can alter metabolism and how this can subsequently influence adaptation to such changes. The module will also cover nutritional trends and contemporary topics from a biochemical standpoint. During the module you will use the skills of using biochemical concepts to critique scientific articles as well as mainstream media articles. You will also utilise these skills to form coherent arguments within the context of contemporary topics.
How will I learn on this module?
The module will be taught through interactive lectures, which may include discussions and tasks, as well as seminars and practical laboratory workshops to give you a full understanding of each concept. Sessions will be delivered in a variety of formats in order to utilise the potential of each learning platform. You will be able to access materials in advance on the eLP to familiarise yourself with the content of each session. Core content will be delivered through lectures in an interactive format. Furthermore, to allow you to develop critiquing skills, staff will also facilitate more in-depth discussion of research articles to enable you to develop your understanding of the scientific concepts within exercise metabolism.
You will also be encouraged to engage in independent study, in particular engaging in other formats (e.g. podcasts, websites) in order to further your knowledge in the area.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will be supported through a variety of means throughout the module. You will be provided with important module information during the introduction session. Information about session content and assessment will also be made available through the eLP. The module staff team will also be available to communicate through the eLP such as discussion boards or the messaging service. In addition to this, staff will be available during tutorial hours for individual support outside of timetabled hours. An assessment session will be provided during the module to afford you the opportunity to ask assessment related questions. During the module, you will have the opportunity to receive formative feedback on your development. Further academic skills will be supported through the University Library services.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

1. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the regulatory processes of human metabolism.
2. Show a critical understanding of the processes and outcomes associated with altered energy metabolism.
3. Demonstrate a critical awareness of the underpinnings in contemporary issues of nutritional research.

4. Justify and defend exercise nutrition recommendations using the scientific evidence base.

5. Translate biochemical principles to solve problems in an applied scenario.
How will I be assessed?
The summative assessment will be an examination (2 hours; 100%) which addresses all module learning outcomes (KU 1,2,3,4,5). You will be required to answer short answer and long answer questions.
This assignment will assess your ability to understand scientific principles within exercise metabolism.
Formative Feedback
Formative feedback will be provided to you during seminars. You will also be provided formative feedback in the form of practice questions to assess your understanding.
Summative Feedback
You will receive written or audio feedback on your summative assessment to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial.

Module abstract
The Exercise Metabolism module provides you with an understanding of the biochemical principles of metabolism. During this module you will be given advanced knowledge of the processes involved in energy metabolism at rest and during exercise. You will gain an understanding of the influences on the adaptive process and will also cover nutritional trends and contemporary topics from a biochemical perspective. The module will be taught through lectures, seminars and practical workshops to give you a full understanding of metabolism from a theoretical and practical standpoint to inform your knowledge required for a career in the research and nutrition industry.
