What will I learn on this module?
This module, which is based in practice, will provide you with the opportunity to advance your skills and knowledge supported by year one practice placement experiences and prepare you for working life as a registered nurse. The module content will specifically focus on leadership, quality and team work, learning will be blended between recall days at the university and online via BlackBoard Ultra as we support your transition to be a registered nurse.
By using a concept curriculum approach, the nursing practice module will support you to become an accountable professional, working in teams to lead and manage quality nursing care. Within the context of your practice placements, you will critically reflect and debate contemporary theories and explore service improvement models, which support sustainable service improvement. Applying your knowledge of team and interprofessional working you will learn how to coordinate safe and effective high quality-care. This will include a collaborative approach embedding the views of service users, lay carers and colleagues in the delivery and enhancement of care. You will be provided opportunities to critically reflect on your own personal and professional responsibility for your continued development as a manager and future leader of service improvement. You will learn how to manage uncertainty and put into practice the strategies that develop resilience in yourself and others.
Through dynamic learning opportunities in practice you will gather evidence to aid completion of your North East Electronic Practice Assessment Document (NEEPAD). Through critical reflection and self-assessment you will complete your Ongoing Record of Achievement (ORA) demonstrating your capability and readiness for independent practice. This demonstrates to a future employer that you are fit to practise as a registered nurse caring for people of all ages and across all care settings.
How will I learn on this module?
In your final practice module you will develop skills for transition from student to registered nurse as placement hours increase in correlation with your independent engagement with on-line supported learning, digital educational resources, seminars and workshops which will utilise enquiry-based learning (EBL) and coaching strategies. In addition, you will spend much of your time in practice placements developing and consolidating your learning. You will learn from experts from practice, Web-based resources, resources through Blackboard Ultra and face-to-face in-class sessions through the ‘flipped classroom’ approach (Bergman & Sams, 2012). This approach enables you to engage with technology-enhanced learning, that includes the provision of links to web-based resources and other materials supported by a combination of online lectures and interactive e-learning packages. Flipping the classroom enables you to engage in both directed and self-directed study outside of formal teaching sessions as preparatory work for facilitated seminars. Engagement with this activity is essential for your active participation in the facilitated sessions. Seminars are a feature of how you learn; the focus being enquiry-based student learning.
You will be focussing on leadership and management, advanced nursing skills, non-technical skills and clinical decision making. There is an expectation that you will fully engage in the self-directed study to analyse and synthesise knowledge in preparation to develop as a future nurse. Practising your professional and clinical skills with increasing independence, you will be seen as a role model, sharing your knowledge and skills whilst challenging practise when necessary. You will also engage in strategies such as action learning sets and peer coaching sessions to prepare you for your future roles in practice, education, research and management/leadership. You will continuously seek and use feedback from your practice supervisors, other students as well as individuals and families to enable self-reflection, focussing and shaping your learning. The module’s learning packages will give you a framework to organise your personal and professional development plan to enable achievement of your current goals and prepare you as a lifelong learner and future nurse.
These sessions will include individual work, group discussion and debate, where you will be encouraged to consider competing perspectives, share opinions and experiences, and develop a greater understanding of holistically caring for people. The use of peer support is a vital component of developing critical discussion and generating ideas and will be utilised during this module.
In practice placements your Practice Supervisor’s, Practice Assessor, Academic Assessor and Practice module team will support and help guide your learning opportunities, working in partnership with Practice Placement Facilitators (PPFs) enriching your overall learning experience that helps construct knowledge in preparation for you to become a dynamic, safe, and caring professional.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
On this module close collaboration between the university and clinical placement areas will continue to provide you with a robust student support network. You will work in partnership with your Practice Supervisor, Practice Assessor, Academic Assessor and Practice Module Team to lead on your development in both practice and in university throughout your final year.
The learning materials within this module will include a wide range of activities, learning materials, videos and workbooks. To optimise your time in practice placement and to orientate your learning to a student led focus, we will utilise Action Learning Sets (ALS). ALS will provide academic support in small collaborative groups to address complexity in clinical practice. Additionally relevant materials will be available via the module’s Online Supported Learning systems which compliment face-to-face teaching and more formal classroom arrangements.
You will also support each other via peer support, through engaging in discussion and debate to enhance your learning. Additional relevant materials will be available via BlackBoard Ultra. These will include the electronic reading list, PowerPoint presentations, recorded lectures and interactive learning packages. The University Libraries at both Coach Lane Campus and City Campus offer an extensive collection of material, both hard copy and electronic, access to international databases and training in information retrieval.
Your allocated Personal Tutor will continue to meet with you regularly and provide you with consistent pastoral support and access to academic guidance. Contact with the module team is available in person, via telephone, email and through Blackboard Ultra. Skills Plus, the University Library’s collection of online learning materials can be used to support the development of your academic skills. Further support for your learning is provided with a 24 hour IT Helpline and the student support and wellbeing service at Northumbria are excellent points of contact for assistance for queries regarding disability, faith, counselling, mental health support, finance and welfare issues. You can access these services via email on your student portal, by telephone or through the help desk staff based within university libraries. All support will be in line with any Student Accessibility Plan (SAP).

What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Critically appraise the evidence base that underpins safeguarding processes and the collaborative management of patient safety.
2. Critically analyse the role of the nurse as a change agent and leader, examining how quality improvement and service development can be used to enhance the wellbeing and experiences of service users and their carers.
3. Evaluate critically how partnership working and collaboration with service users, carers and professionals contributes to identifying need, design and sustainability of a future healthcare service improvement.
Intellectual / Professional Skills & Abilities:
4. Demonstrate capability for independent practice in a range of clinical skills and competencies acting as a role model to facilitate learning and assessment for a diverse learner population.

How will I be assessed?
You will be continuously supervised in your practice placements, this will generate feedback for your assessments.
Formative Assessment:
You will undertake a a variety of summative assessments, identified in the NEEPAD, which include episodes of care, medication assessments, written reflections and service user/patient feedback.
At the end of each placement you will reflect on your practice development and review your progress with your Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor (MLO’s 1,2,3,4,5)
Summative Assessment: Pass/Refer
Graded – Following feedback from your Practice Supervisors, a grade will be awarded by your Practice Assessor and Academic Assessor against the proficiencies and evidence in the North East Electronic Practice Assessment Document (NEEPAD) Part 3.

Module abstract
This final year practice-based module, will help you to consolidate the skills, attitudes and behaviours that you have developed throughout your nursing studies. This module will provide you with the opportunity to advance your skills and knowledge directly relevant to your final year practice placement experiences and prepare you for working life as a registered nurse. This includes basic life support, moving and handling and other mandatory training. You will be required to attend all mandatory training prior to commencing clinical placements. The module will specifically focus on leadership, quality and teamwork. You will be supported to become an accountable professional, working in teams to lead and manage quality nursing care. In line with the philosophy of a concept curriculum, we will facilitate your active learning by requiring you to apply concepts in clinical contexts and allow knowledge transfer to unfamiliar situations.
You will develop a deeper understanding of the complexities of providing nursing care to people and the impact that specific conditions or events may have on the person and their family including those with chronic or life limiting conditions. You will hear from Experts by Experience to understand the effect the care you provide to the person or family can have. Increasing your knowledge base from different perspectives ensures that as a reflective practitioner you are able to consider individual solutions for the benefit of healthcare users and their families. You will gain the knowledge and skills needed for effective practice in continually changing and challenging environments. You will develop the confidence and ability to think critically and provide expert evidenced based care to become a future nurse who is able to deftly combine knowledge and skill to lead excellence in nursing.
