SP7003 - Clinical Placement and Professional Practice

What will I learn on this module?

This clinical placement and professional practice module will help you learn and gain experience of working in a professional environment. You will learn about the scope of the clinical exercise physiologist, how to reflect on your practice, and important skills in motivational interviewing and behaviour change that you can apply to your practice. You will undertake a placement within one or more clinical or community settings that fall within the scope of the clinical exercise physiologist. You will keep a record of your learning activities in a portfolio and reflect on your experiences. This module aims to enhance your understanding of working in a clinical/community environment and enhance your employability prospects.

How will I learn on this module?

The taught content will be delivered and provided in a variety of formats, including lectures and seminars. In seminars, you be presented to and may be asked to present and discuss evidence related to topics such as portfolio development, motivational interviewing and behaviour change. In placement settings, you will gain first-hand experience of working with professionals in a sector related to clinical exercise physiology. You will be able to access materials on the eLP. There will be the opportunity to work in smaller groups with discipline specific members of staff who will facilitate context driven discussion and learning. You will also be set independent tasks informed by key literature to complete outside of class time to further develop your understanding of the taught content.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

A placement tutor will help you identify relevant placements, you will also have seminar activities to support your portfolio development with an allocated tutor. Module information, assessment requirements and expectations, and important module announcements will be made through the eLP. Material to support your learning will be uploaded in advance of sessions. You will be provided with content verbally and guided through tasks during timetabled sessions. A dedicated assessment session will afford you the opportunity to ask assessment related questions in class. The Module Leader is there to support you with any queries that you may have about the module content, and all staff members provide tutorial time outside of class time. Module tutors will provide you with the necessary information on how to arrange a tutorial. You will have the opportunity to receive formative feedback on your development during the module, and you will receive feedback on summative work to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial. There is also further academic skills support available from the University Library services.

Understand the role of a clinical exercise physiologist.

Understand how to apply the knowledge you have learned on the programme in to practice.

The ability to effectively record and reflect on your practice in clinical and/or community settings, to support your own learning and development.

How will I be assessed?

Portfolio and reflection – you will keep a record of your placement hours and activities on your placement(s). You will submit this with a 2000 word reflection on your personal and professional development during the placement(s) and identify how you have applied knowledge that you have learned on the programme to your placement practice (MLO 1-4).



Formative feedback will be provided during practical and seminar sessions where you will be given tasks to complete such as goal setting and self-assessment.



You will receive written or audio feedback on your summative assessment to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during a tutorial.?

Module abstract

The clinical placement and professional skills module is designed to develop your understanding of the professional scope and practice of the clinical exercise physiologist. You will complete a placement(s) in a clinical and/or community setting. You will keep a record of your learning and development whilst on placement in a portfolio. This will help you to reflect on your practice. Recording professional development and reflecting on practice are important skills that are used throughout professional careers. You will also learn about motivational interviewing and behaviour change on this module. Teaching is carried out by staff that are experts in their respective fields and have strong research backgrounds in clinical exercise physiology. This module aims to enhance your understanding of working in a clinical/community environment and enhance your employability prospects.
