What will I learn on this module?
This module allows you to explore a topic related to your Masters programme of your own choosing to an advanced level developing a critical appreciation of the methodologies, recent advances and future potential in that field. In doing so, you will develop and refine your research skills including information retrieval, evaluative, analytical, and problem solving skills together with group-based written and oral communication skills.
How will I learn on this module?
The emphasis is on guided independent study; within a small group of your peers you will choose a broad area of common interest to research. Once agreed, you will each define an aspect of that research you wish to study in detail. Together you will produce a group portfolio of inter-related individually-written chapters. An important aspect of the module is peer-review; you will support the development of your colleagues’ contribution by providing constructive criticism to raise the overall quality of the portfolio. You will each present your research in a short talk to the group and tutor and receive verbal feedback and advice ahead of submission of a chapter draft to the group for their written critique. Once the final portfolio is submitted you will submit an anonymous critique of each chapter.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
The emphasis here is very much on peer-support, peer review and independent study but you will be supported throughout by a tutor who will guide your discussions and provide their own feedback particularly in respect to the appropriate depth of enquiry, the suitability of sources of information and general advice on scientific / professional writing.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
M1. Develop a detailed understanding of the methodologies, recent advances and future potential in a chosen research field.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
M2. Conduct a literature search in order to retrieve and analyse scientific data/ findings from relevant primary research literature.
M3. Interpret scientific data, assess their significance and discuss the implications of these data as part of a team.
M4. Compose a chapter of a team-based portfolio
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
M5. Evaluate the contribution of individual team members through the composition of a critique of their chapters
How will I be assessed?
Deliver a 2000 word literature review as a component of a coherent group portfolio
Contributes 70% module score.
MLOs assessed M1-M4.
Provide a 500 word critique of each of the other contributions to the portfolio.

Module abstract
This module offers you the opportunity to carry out in-depth research into a topic of your own choosing. In a small group setting and guided by a tutor, you will select a series of inter-related topics with the aim of producing a portfolio of chapters. You will meet with your colleagues periodically and support the development of each other’s work through short presentations and discussions and then a written critique of draft chapters. The process will help you develop your own writing style and also your ability to critically appraise your own draft versions ahead of your research project thesis and later submission of your writing in a professional context. The overall development of your communication and collaborative skills will enhance your employability.
