At Northumbria’s School of Geography and Natural Sciences, we are driven by one goal: protecting planetary health and building a more resilient future for both people and the natural world.

Our subjects are diverse – from geography to chemistry, microbiology to forensic science – yet they are united by a common purpose: solving real-world problems and making a positive impact on society and the planet.

LEARN FROM THE EXPERTS

Our internationally renowned researchers teach across our programmes. You will learn from experts at the forefront of their fields, with cutting-edge insights embedded into your lectures, laboratory sessions, and fieldwork.

Our research excellence spans cryospheric and climate science, big data analysis, chemistry, biotechnology, environmental science, biomedical sciences, and development geography – and our teaching is just as strong.

LEARNING BY EXPERIENCE

Learning here is hands-on. Every course includes extensive lab-based teaching or experiential learning – from field trips investigating changing environments, to honing forensic skills at our dedicated Crime Scene House, or gaining consultancy experience with real clients.

You will also have the opportunity to undertake placements. Some are built into modules, while others offer the option of a sandwich year with organisations such as Procter & Gamble, GlaxoSmithKline, the Environment Agency, and the NHS. These opportunities will help you develop applied skills, critical thinking, and digital literacy – the qualities employers value most.

STRONG INDUSTRY LINKS

We work closely with industry through our Employers’ Forum and Industry Steering Committee, regularly reviewing and adapting our teaching to ensure you gain the skills and knowledge the world needs next.

Our graduates progress into a wide range of careers – from environmental managers and data analysts to forensic scientists and biologists. Whether you are preparing for a role in the NHS, tackling climate change through modelling and measurement, or researching how to create a more just and equitable society, you will find your place here – within a diverse, inclusive community of scientists driven by purpose, curiosity, and care.

ACCREDITATIONS

We have strong relationships with professional and regulatory bodies, which accredit many of our courses. This ensures our programmes remain current, relevant, and aligned with industry standards.
