What will I learn on this module?
This module is designed to develop an understanding of the principles and applications of nutritional interventions in the context of sport and exercise performance and health outcomes.
You will learn about the scientific evidence behind health claims associated with dietary interventions, the use of ergogenic aids and other supplementation through critical evaluation. You will learn about the effects and detection of drugs and doping agents within sport. In addition, the role of the nutritionist in practice will be reviewed in accordance with external guidelines/codes of conduct for nutrition professionals.
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through lectures, tutorials and independent learning. The lectures will provide the knowledge required for you to understand the theoretical aspects of the specialist subjects that will enable you to put into practice these concepts during the assessments. Tutorials will provide a more interactive approach to the topic through discussion and dissection of relevant topics.
Directed learning will support the material delivered during taught sessions and will allow you to consolidate your knowledge and understanding of the subject matter and support your transition to independent learning and critical analysis.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
The module tutor will provide you with academic material to support taught sessions on the respective module sites using the eLP. Material to support lectures will be uploaded in advance of lectures and the module tutor is able to provide you with guidance about the module content. You will also have the opportunity to attend tutorial sessions to receive guidance on the assessments.
In terms of wider university support, the library has a comprehensive portfolio of short courses, structured help, and leaflets to help you with issues such as, the English language, academic writing, basic mathematics, software programmes such as Microsoft Excel, statistics, critical thinking, laboratory report writing, and more general information such as “how to find a book or journal”, or “how to order an Inter-Library loan”. These can be accessed at the help desk in the library itself or online (www.northumbria.ac.uk/skillsplus).
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
• Research particular topics in sport and exercise in the context of nutritional research
• Formulate appropriate dietary recommendations that influence sport and exercise based on evidence from primary literature
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
• Interpret and critically evaluate primary research data and discuss the significance and implications of the research findings
• Present outcomes of research findings clearly and succinctly to a specified audience
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
• Understand the legal and ethical responsibilities of professional practice in relation to advice on supplementation
How will I be assessed?
The assessment will be split between a 10 minute (with 5 min questions) oral presentation (40%) and a critical review of a recent article in sports nutrition (60%). The oral presentation will be on a dietary regime form a specific sport or disease, as if given to health professionals.

Module abstract
‘Investigative Sports and Exercise Nutrition’ is designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of nutritional research tools used in the field, from model systems to designing human dietary intervention studies, taking into account standard methods in nutritional epidemiology. You will further an understanding of dietary interventions for weight loss and weight gain, for changing behaviour and communication of dietary recommendations in this target population. You will focus on interventions in the context of sports performance and health outcomes, focus on the use of supplementation and non-dietary interventions on the effects and legislative issues associated with intake of ergogenic aids, doping agents and drugs.
The role and limitations of the nutritionist in dietary practice and care, including code of conduct and other professional issues will also be covered. Furthermore, through a series of ‘Behind the Headlines’ tutorials you will be shown how to critically analyse and review current topics and research papers.
