The BA (Hons) Fashion course at Northumbria offers you the opportunity to explore craftsmanship, aesthetics and the encapsulation of the body through a range of materials, pattern cutting and manufacturing processes, constructed knitwear and printed textiles for fashion.
This four-year sandwich course has an established reputation for producing directional designers with the creative vision and the commercial realism to begin a career within the Fashion sector.
This Fashion programme has successfully developed the professional identity of our graduates since 1955.
You will learn how to challenge the conventions of contemporary fashion through design research and critical reflection, set against the study of traditional values of high craftsmanship that underpin garment-making and textile construction; from haute couture collections and archival fashion, to emerging new designers sustainability and ethical fashion practice.
You will be supported in your journey by experienced academic and technical staff helping you to identify a personal fashion design philosophy, and develop your intellectual design practice and artisan craft skills. Moreover, you'll have the opportunity to explore our Fashion Masters program, which will keep you ahead in the constantly evolving fashion industry, allowing you to enhance your creative abilities and excel in this dynamic field.

Learning and teaching centres around hands-on exploration of craftsmanship, technical skills, materials and processes enabling you to display evidence of your creative thinking. Activities in design studios and specialist workshop environments are integral to this process in all levels of your study, encouraging individual creative freedom in a collaborative design community.
We aim to nurture innovative designers through project-based teaching and learning strategies, integrating design practice, knowledge, intellectual and transferable skills.
Assessment principles on the Fashion course are planned to support your progression and use a wide range of projects and tasks that are reinforced through both formative and summative assessment.

You will learn from award-winning, research-active academic staff that bring a wealth of professional experience from the world of fashion to Northumbria. Our academic staff have worked as successful designers globally for some of the world’s biggest brands including Vivienne Tam, Vivienne Westwood, Tommy Hilfiger, Abercrombie & Fitch and Nigel Cabourn. You will be taught by industry experts, developing the essential skills you need to succeed in your future career from inspiring, exciting and innovative staff.
Research-active staff act as consultants and provide supportive critiques, questioning the reasoning and aesthetic judgement behind your work, to support you in developing your practice through self-reflection.
Alumni and industry collaborators support the course at every level through professional association, live projects, internships, visiting lecturers and competitive portfolio briefs. We have recently collaborated with Urban Outfitters, All Saints, Old Navy, Joseph, Dunhill and Mulberry.

When it comes to making sure you learn from the best, our Fashion staff are second to none, having worked at the likes of Vivienne Tam and Tommy Hilfiger, to the best tailors on Savile Row.
A studio-based and workshop-based learning environment is at the core of this course and you’ll find that the technical facilities at Northumbria are excellent. You’ll have access to a specialist Mac laboratory as well as several mobile laboratories that deliver IT facilities for creative working. The machine room is equipped to industry standards and you can use digitally-enabled textile printing, pattern-making and embroidery. Everything is supported by skilled technical staff who will help you make the best use of all the facilities that are available.
Technology is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists that will guide your preparation for seminars and independent research. Electronic Submission and Feedback (eSAF) will facilitate feedback on your project work, while Turnitin will reinforce a critical approach to research and the development of your own ideas.

Fashion is a practice-based course driven by research and delivered by dynamic, industry-experienced and entrepreneurial staff who are research active. This energetic environment provides a framework that creates an enquiring, analytical and creative approach to complex design challenges.
Throughout your studies, you’ll undertake enquiry-based learning that involves self-initiated research, independent judgement and critical self-awareness. You’ll become an active participant in your learning as you tackle real-life challenges, integrating fashion design practice with research, academic and intellectual skills.
In your first year (level 4) you’ll be introduced to research methodologies, studio and workshop activities, giving you the knowledge of industry standards and professional competencies to prepare you for industrial placement or study abroad.
During your second and third years (level 5) industrial placement, competitions and industrially linked ‘live’ projects allow you to contextualise your prior learning and further develop your practical competencies to work collaboratively to industry standards.
By your final year, your design practice will be informed by current critical debate, and a creative and exploratory approach to your own specialism.
This programme has successfully developed the professional identity of our graduates since 1955. Undergraduate and graduate portfolios contain creative projects, some set by external collaborators, enable you to build and curate a portfolio of your own work. This portfolio will be a central element in applications for work placements and employment.
This course is a creative platform with a track record in educating a significant number of respected designers.
At Northumbria you will be part of a culture fashion design established in in 1955, crucial in developing your professional identity.
Your creative projects, some set by external collaborators, will enable you to build and curate a portfolio of your own work. This portfolio will be a central element in applications for work placements and employment.
You may also have the opportunity to join a field trip to Paris, London or New York to experience fashion in a different culture and to enhance your knowledge from an international perspective.
Study Abroad is also an option for students in year 2 and 3 (level 5) as an alternative to one of the Industrial placement modules.
In your final year, you will have the opportunity to show your final project at a key industry-facing national showcase for graduate talent in this discipline. This will help you establish contacts and employment opportunities by mixing directly with invited employers and alumni.
You will be supported through preparatory exercises for job applications and with interview techniques. In addition, Northumbria University’s Careers Service offers support to all students with regards to employment.
Our graduates are consistently employed across a wide range of design positions in the fashion industry, such as; Richard Nicoll, Lanvin, Christopher Kane, Burberry, Eley Kishimoto, Ralph Lauren, Old Navy and River Island. This success can be attributed to their thorough knowledge of the fashion design process and their professional approach to design challenges. Our long-standing partnership with industry offers opportunities at both undergraduate and graduate level.
You can also undertake further study at postgraduate level with a course such as our Design MA. If you decide to start up your own business, it’s good to know that the combined turnover of our graduates’ start-up companies is higher than that of any other UK university.
Whatever you decide to do, you’ll have strong employability as a result of having acquired the characteristics of a Northumbria graduate. These include critical reflection and self-learning, collaboration and curiosity, and the ability to apply your knowledge to solve problems in ways that are sustainable and ethical.

ADDITIONAL COSTS
During your 4 years of study you will incur additional costs such as consumable art & design materials, tools, fabrics and years, books, printing, technology, study visits, promotional materials, final collection materials and promotional exhibitions. In years 1 to 3 your costs will vary according to your individual needs, but you will need to budget for a minimum of 2 x A3 sketchbooks per year, plus art materials (see equipment list), and printing costs. The university provides basic industrial sewing kit and pattern grading square at cost price to first year students (approx. £80). You will also need to budget for calico for toiles, and fabric scissors, pins, etc. (approx. £50+), as well as any additional fabrics/trims over what is already provided by the university for year 1-3 project work. There are optional, subsidised day study trips that may incur small personal costs e.g. meals, entry to museums etc. There are also optional student-funded international study visits, which vary in cost according to destination (budget for approx. £500 for a 3-4 day study visit). There may be costs associated with placement at Level 5. Students on the programme have a mandatory Industrial Placement in Level 5. While the programme advises against taking unpaid roles, students are responsible for any related costs not covered by their placement, and you may need to budget for accommodation, travel and subsistence, depending on your individual circumstances. In final year you will need to purchase fabrics/yarns/trims for your final collection, and a presentation portfolio (£60+). You might also incur exhibition and other costs for your final show, such as travel, accommodation, etc. Participation in competitions in final year may also incur small entry fees (e.g. £30). While there are Macs to work on in university, students prefer to have their own Macbook (approx. £1000). It is recommended that you purchase a portable hard drive(s) to back up your digital work (approx. £50) as well as a personal SD card for digital cameras (approx. £10). Final year students also have their own group website that costs participating students between £10-£20 each.
