BR5002 - Leadership and Management in Practice

What will I learn on this module?

This module combines theory and practice to allow you to develop an in-depth understanding about core leadership and management principles and subsequently enabling you to apply these concepts to a range of scenarios. The module also enables you to understand and apply your leadership and management capabilities. This will be achieved through a one day leadership and management development bootcamp where you will be involved in a range of practical activities and deal with complex scenarios which will assist you to explore the practical implementation of leadership concepts and enhance your interpersonal and intrapersonal capabilities through expert feedback and reflective practice.

Therefore, the module emphasises a critical understanding of relevant theoretical perspectives, experiential learning and reflective practices simultaneously to develop and enhance leadership and management capability to deal with contemporary issues faced by organisations.

Accordingly , the module contents focus on three key aspects including (i) nurturing leadership and management capability (ii) personal development and (iii) enhancing professionalism, reflective and career management practices.

• Critical review of Leadership and Management Theories [with focus on Millennials and Generation Z Characteristics]
• Emotional and Cultural Intelligence
• Teamworking and Creativity Focused Learning and Development Interventions
• Enhancing Employability through Psychometric Tests including Gamification, Assessment Centre Exercises and IQ/EQ based tests
• Motivation
• Sustainability
• Feedback and Transactional Analysis
• Developing Personal Leadership and Management Skills [by assessing learners personalities, learning styles, aptitude and abilities]
• Professionalism, Networking, and Career Management

How will I learn on this module?

At The Bridge you learn through a blended approach where short, focused and interactive face-to-face sessions are underpinned by guided and independent online learning. Your attendance for scheduled activities is monitored regardless of whether you are on campus or joining the session remotely. This ensures you access all of the learning opportunities which have been purposefully designed for your success.

A range of teaching and learning approaches are adopted to accelerate your learning in this module.

During the first week of this module, you will receive information about the module and Teaching & Learning Plan. The teaching and learning plan (TLP) sets out
• Learning outcomes and overall module and programme aims
• Teaching, learning and assessment strategy
• Teaching schedule
• Directed reading references (text and journals) and core texts for the module
• References to data sources and details of lab activities

You will also receive the assessment brief which sets out the formative and summative assessments throughout the module.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

There are three key sources of academic support available to you during your time at the Bridge in addition to Ask4Help who are available 24/7 for general queries related to your studies.

Your Module Tutor
Your module tutor is responsible for your learning outcomes on the module. They deliver the workshops and provide guidance in relation to learning and assignments. They develop all of the key resources and make them available through the eLP (electronic learning portal module) Blackboard, which is used to provide support materials, interactive learning tasks and give you regular opportunities to test and get feedback on your learning. You will be given both written and verbal feedback and guidance on your work and progress during the semester by your module tutor.

Your Learning Mentor
On programme, you will have your in-person and online engagement activity tracked against the learning plan with key check-in points built into the academic calendar to ensure you maximise your learning potential. Engagement with formative assessments will also be used by the learning mentor to discuss any action planning required to ensure success.

Academic Skills Team
The Bridge aspires to build a range of student skillsets, including digital skills, academic writing and discourse, working alone and in teams. Your learning mentor may refer you a dedicated academic skills team which is based in the centre. Here you can attend drop-ins or schedule 1-1 sessions on issues which have been identified at the diagnostic stages of the programme however you may also have self-identified areas for your own growth and self-refer yourself for support.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
MLO1: Demonstrate a critical understanding of contemporary theories and models of leadership and management.

Intellectual / Professional Skills & Abilities:
MLO2: Systematically identify and be able to critically analyse and evaluate interpersonal, intrapersonal competencies, personal leadership styles and behaviours.
MLO3: Be able to critically apply reflective practices to deal with a given problem scenario.

Personal Values Attributes (Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Skills):
MLO4: Demonstrate enhanced skills of self-awareness, cultural awareness, self-analysis and reflective practices to improve personal, professional and leadership competence.

How will I be assessed?

You will receive formative feedback throughout the module including at the following checkpoints:-

•Week 2: Navigating the course materials
•Week 4: Completing the in-module reflective tasks
•Week 6: Completing the in-module knowledge checks and tasks

There are two components to the assessment of this module. Create a 5 minutes Podcast video to reflect on key aspects, insights and learning from the leadership bootcamp. In this podcast, you will debate and reflect on how bootcamp activities helped you to practice the learned concepts, refined thoughts, behaviours, skills and improved your leadership and management capability linking to the module topics. Also, how it will assist you in your professional career in the future. This will assess MLO2.

You will then produce a 2500 words report demonstrating your critical understanding of three key leadership and management topics.

You will also carry out a self-analysis based on psychometric tests to assess your leadership and management behaviours and critically reflect on their implications in your future career. This will assess MLO1, MLO3 and MLO4.

Module abstract

The module aims to enhance your critical understanding of leadership theories and models and also enable you to review and adopt leadership and management concepts within your current and future career roles. Additionally, the module emphasises the continually changing business environment where it is imperative that the leaders and managers understand the nature, characteristics, behaviours, preferences, and attitudes of the workforce consisting of Millennials and Generation Z to establish robust relationships with them, utilise their capabilities fully and galvanise them around the organisation’s objectives. Therefore, the module facilitates you to develop your professional identity by identifying your leadership styles, behaviours, and attitudes through a range of professional tests.

As part of this module, you will also attend a day bootcamp event where you will be involved in a range of practical activities and deal with complex scenarios which will assist you to explore the practical implementation of the learned concepts and enhance your interpersonal and intrapersonal capabilities through expert feedback and reflective practice.

Therefore, the module emphasises a critical understanding of relevant theoretical perspectives, experiential learning and reflective practices simultaneously to develop and enhance leadership and management capability to deal with contemporary issues faced by organisations.
