What will I learn on this module?
On this module you will learn a range of evidence based professional skills required for registration and employment as a nurse, supporting professional nursing practice with patients and clients of all ages with diverse health and nursing needs including; adults and/or children admitted for acute medical or surgical care; individuals and families supported by maternity care service; patients cared for within community settings including their own home. Specifically, you will be exploring key themes around becoming a safe, effective and efficient healthcare professional and utilising evidence based information to inform your safe practice across diverse healthcare settings. Themes in this module will include: communication and collaboration with other professionals and agencies; the concept of health; and assessment of health or care needs to ensure patient safety. You will engage in fundamental practices such as patient handover, documentation of vital observations and recognition of deterioration. You will also learn mandatory skills to ensure you are able to practice safely and effectively with patients of all ages and varying needs.
How will I learn on this module?
The focus of this module will be learning in clinical practice placements; however, this will also be supported by classroom-based instruction and online learning. Your professional learning in practice will be supported by research rich academic knowledge and critical understanding development through tutor guided independent learning. Lectures, seminars, and practical sessions incorporating role play and simulation using MCASTs simulation facilities, will provide you with opportunities to develop an appreciation of the importance of integrating practice and formal theory. Your lectures will examine key sources of policy and theoretical literature and will encourage you to connect with your own independent reading, which will be key to your success. Your practice learning sessions will enable you to make stronger links between theory and practice, while developing your confidence and clinical performance. You will be expected to engage in tutor guided and self-directed independent learning by reading suggested literature from the module reading list and other sources of reference material. You will also be expected to engage with technology enabled online learning resources to support your learning.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
As with all other modules on your programme, successful academic achievement requires a system of robust support and guidance to help
you develop and focus on your learning needs. Therefore, within this module you will be supported and/or mentored by qualified nurses in the practice learning setting, and academic staff from MCAST who are also qualified nurses with relevant practical experience, and theoretical knowledge. The development of your competencies for practice will be supported by material from your classroom based lectures, seminars and practical teaching sessions, in addition to tutor/self-directed independent learning materials provided. You will be given guidance on how to use placement learning and assessment documentation. You will also be visited by your personal tutor on placement who will discuss your progress with you and your allocated mentor.
This will ensure you are able to confidently meet the learning outcomes of the module, which will include a range of professional competencies. Your mentor is the key source of learning support whilst on placement. Additional technology enabled academic support will be available online for example via the E learning portal (Blackboard), social networking, mobile applications and collaborative tools.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
By the end of the module you will be able to:
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Be able to discuss a range of evidence/research that underpins nursing practice with people from a range of ages and diverse health needs including adults, children and maternity care needs and those patients cared for within hospital and community settings.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
2. Apply evidence to perform a range of practical skills in a safe and effective way in a range of clinical settings.
3. Identify the impact of nursing assessment and intervention on the health, wellbeing and safety of patients and families of all ages including those in acute, community and maternity care settings.

How will I be assessed? (SRS 0006)

Formative:
Your professional and practical skills, knowledge and competencies will be assessed during your practice placement in a range of ways. This will include regular, informal, feedback from your mentor and completion of a number of structured assessments that will give you detailed feedback on your performance. These will include Direct Observation of Practice assessments (DOPs), Total Client Care assessments (TCC) and if deemed appropriate by your mentor, a service user evaluation questionnaire (SUE-Q) (MLO 1-5).
Summative:
1. You will be required to develop your Professional Reflective Portfolio (PRP) which will contain a record of your practice achievements including formative feedback, reflective accounts, and an account of key activity. (MLO 2,4,5,6)
2. A tripartite assessment will evaluate your understanding of the evidence base that underpins your practice. You will meet with your academic assessor, ideally in a practice setting, where your mentor(s) feedback on your performance over the year will be evaluated. You will have the opportunity during the meeting to discuss evidence and illustrate your developing nursing knowledge and understanding (MLO 1,2, 3,4,5). Module abstract
On this module you will learn a range of evidence based professional skills required for registration and employment as a nurse. Specifically, you will be exploring key themes around becoming a safe, effective and efficient healthcare professional and utilising evidence based information to inform your safe practice nursing children and adults. Themes in this module will include: communication and collaboration with other professionals and agencies; the concept of health; and assessment of health or care needs to ensure patient safety including patients with diverse health and nursing needs including acute medical or surgical care and patients being cared for within the community and/or accessing maternity services. Research rich learning relevant to professional practice will be enabled through face to face and technology enhanced learning, undertaken in both the classroom and in the practice learning setting, where you will be supported by a mentor who is a qualified experienced registered nurse. A range of formative assessment strategies will be used in practice to support your learning towards the summative assessment where you will be expected to demonstrate to your mentor and your personal tutor that you have achieved the learning outcomes of the module. This will include collating a record of your achievements and learning within your personal reflective portfolio which is the starting point to prepare you for future employment and lifelong learning.
