MW4004 - Public Health

You will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars, and directed study. There will be the opportunity for groupwork to facilitate collaborative team learning developing your enquiry and communication skills. Further reading and learning activities will be signposted throughout the module on the e-learning portal (BBU). There will be opportunities to reflect on learning in practice and to discuss the care needs of the women and the families you have met in your clinical learning on your programme thus far.

Support will include feedback from tutors during group work within interactive lectures and seminars, which will allow questions to be answered promptly. The seminars will also provide an opportunity for you to receive feedback on how your academic abilities are developing. In class and online formative tests will be used throughout the module, to allow you to assess your personal learning. Extensive support is available online, as part of the University’s commitment to technology enhanced learning. This includes the use of BlackBoard Ultra as the electronic platform for all module content. Resources will be available to you on the electronic learning platform (BBU and tutors may be contacted for support. A group tutorial will provide academic support focussed on the assessment task.
The University Libraries at both Coach Lane Campus and City Campus offer an extensive collection of material, both hard copy and electronic, access to international databases and training in information retrieval. During this module, you will be introduced to key concepts around health and ill health and their influences on the childbearing continuum. This module will assist you in your learning of health and public health issues within maternity and to the wider population. It will assist you in developing the skills needed for effective practice by developing your appreciation of health, health inequalities and the lives of women prior to pregnancy (pre-conception). By exploring the themes and topics on offer, you will understand the social, global and structural aspects that impact upon women’s lives. There are opportunities to explore the support given to women and their families through health education, information and health promotion. The module will also help you to appreciate the services available to women and the public health aspects of the role of the midwife as you begin your professional journey.
