What will I learn on this module?
The aim of the module is to provide you with an opportunity to explore potential career pathways and develop an understanding of professional roles by undertaking a career development project. Exploring entry routes and requirements of occupations through a range of sources, including direct contact with professionals, will further develop research skills as well as develop and utilise networks to help you to enhance your employability. You will conduct a study into a chosen professional area, reflect critically upon a range of academic and work related experiences and consider how these have informed your career identity and contributed to the development of graduate attributes and employability skills. You will complete an application and undertake a mock interview in which you will be supported to reflect upon and verbally articulate your graduate skills, attributes and values.
How will I learn on this module?
You will attend a series of lectures and seminars to explore key concepts relating to employability and career development learning (career choice and decision making, employability and entrepreneurship). You will develop research and employability skills by being introduced to a range of careers resources (available through the Careers and Employment Service), job search and networking strategies (through a range of methods from face to face to LinkedIn). These are supported by the e-learning portal. Much of the learning on this module will be experiential and you will interview professionals (including alumni) to gather evidence for the study. Seminars, peer led workshops and tutorials (in which you will receive regular formative feedback) will help you to prepare for the study, support reflection and consolidate learning.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Module tutors and guidance tutors will support you to identify the scope and methods for the study and provide feedback on your developing employability skills/graduate attributes. Resources will be available via the e-learning portal and additional workshops will be held to help you to explore a range of potential graduate employment pathways, self-employment and further study options.
This module builds on the ‘Learning at University’ and ‘Introduction to Academic Research’ modules in developing and reflecting upon your evolving graduate skills and attributes, and, with the support of your guidance tutor, you will and recording key experiences and reflections in your e-portfolio..
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the roles of professionals and challenges of professional practice.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the employment and study routes in to your chosen area(s) of career interest.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
3. Develop and articulate your employability skills and graduate attributes (e.g. networking, presentation, problem solving, communication, self-efficacy, adaptability).
4. Develop networking, inquiry and research skills through engagement with a variety of information sources and direct contact with professionals.
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
5. Reflect upon your own values, attributes and interests in relation to your future career.
How will I be assessed?
Summative assessment
Career Development Project (60%) 2000 words (LOs 1, 2, 4)
Provide evidence of research into your chosen career, including; the nature and challenges of the professional role, and potential routes into your chosen occupation/s, Labour Market information (including what employers are looking for, how competitive it is).
Presentation (40%) (LOs 3, 5)
Critically reflect upon a range of academic , personal and work related experiences and consider how these have informed your career plans and contributed to the development of graduate attributes and employability skills.
Identify areas for development and key actions in relation to your career development.
Written feedback will be given.
Formative assessment: Completed application form, CV or personal statement and mock interview. You will receive verbal feedback from your tutor and peers

Module abstract
This ‘hands on’ module allows you to explore potential career pathways and gain valuable insight into a professional role of your choice by undertaking a career development project. You will develop research skills and engage directly with professionals, giving you the opportunity to develop essential networks and employability skills. You will also be supported to undertake a series of practical yet challenging activities to prepare you for life as a Guidance and Counselling graduate such as making job applications and undertaking job interviews. A particular advantage of this module is that you are able to tailor the project to suit your own career interests and aspirations.

Full time Courses are primarily delivered via on-campus face to face learning but could include elements of online learning.
