SP5020 - The Business of Sport

What will I learn on this module?

The sport sector has grown rapidly into a multi-billion pound global industry and is now recognised as big business. You will focus on the business principles that sit at its core and consider key factors, processes, concepts and ideas pertinent to the development of the world’s most creative industry. You will examine the work of sport business professionals, agencies, organisations and governing bodies to gain a critical appreciation of how business principles are applied to the sports industry. You will be encouraged and supported to tailor your creative and innovative spirit to the development of new sport product and service ideas and apply them to a real-world case study situation. This module will help to coalesce your critical insight and application of the principles of strategy, governance, marketing, finance, legal issues and
performance management through a consumer, business-focused lens. This is a module aimed at enhancing your employability skills and experiences through the provision of a platform to practice a number of academic and key transferable skills that will develop your confidence and enthusiasm to seek a career in the sports industry.

How will I learn on this module?

You will be expected to take an active role in your own learning and personal and professional development. You will be expected to apply theoretical knowledge through applied situations to show your progressive appreciation of the increasingly complex issues presented by the business of sport. The teaching and learning environment will be interactive and challenging. You will engage in a range of learning activities including tutor and peer-assisted interactive lectures, seminars and workshops. You will interact with e-learning technologies to enhance your e-tech skills and attributes, and to produce your assignments. You will perform against an on-going process of learning and assessment. You will benefit from regular opportunity for structured assistance designed to help you to review, critique and engender improvements to your
own performance.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

We support you throughout your learning journey to achieve your potential. The interactive nature of the module, in particular through activities in workshops and seminars, is organised to inspire you to release inhibitions and facilitate risk taking and experimentation in new problem-solving techniques and to motivate and engage your attitude towards your own learning experience. The assessments are planned to ensure you have suitably designed tasks and assignments with clearly defined criteria and standards. The module is designed to ensure there is connectivity between you, the tutors, and your peers (face-to-face or via e-tech) to maximize your learning opportunities. A three-pronged constructive relationship is encouraged to ensure a clear sense of purpose and positive intention in-line with your own academic, personal and professional needs and goals. Specific module content is available on the university eLP: module outline, module assessment,
session workbooks, reading lists (including key texts, academic articles, and industry specific sources), and social media feeds build a valuable learning resource that you will be encouraged to enhance for your own specific needs and interests.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

3) Use and adapt sport specific business insights to present solutions to issues and scenarios pertinent to the business of sport.
4) Critique established ideas, concepts and techniques when examining practices employed by organisations operating within
the sport industry.

Formative assessment: class-based and e-task developmental work with peer and tutor feedback.

Full time Courses are primarily delivered via on-campus face to face learning but could include elements of online learning. Most courses run as planned and as promoted on our website and via our marketing materials, but if there are any substantial changes (as determined by the Competition and Markets Authority) to a course or there is the potential that course may be withdrawn, we will notify all affected applicants as soon as possible with advice and guidance regarding their options.
