What will I learn on this module?
You will be introduced here to the role and function of the architect and the architectural technologist within the built environment. You will look at the wide range of activities that go together to make up the busy world of design and construction and begin to consider your future position within the workplace. You will consider the practical application of a theoretical background that informs the way in which the built environment is designed and delivered. You will learn about the design process and fundamental construction technology and material solutions.
How will I learn on this module?
Introductory information will be conveyed in lectures, informal project workshops or studio situations, many of which will be student led. You will work both individually and in groups to investigate, communicate and report upon current practice. Where appropriate visits to building sites and practices will be used to authenticate the learning and to reinforce theoretical background. You will be given the opportunity to reflect upon your learning and/or experience as it grows.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
The module will be delivered in a blend of lectures, smaller seminar groups, small tutorial groups and studio workshops. Extensive use will be made of the electronic learning portal (ELP) to support and complement the classroom and workplace activity.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
MLO1: Understand the roles and responsibilities of architectural professionals.
MLO2: You will gain an awareness of commonly used building materials and technologies

MLO3: You will develop an ability to research and report on architectural design and technology
MLO4: You will develop skills and techniques in verbal and visual communication and the design process and presentation

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed using a blend of presentation, textual report, and graphical display. There will be one assignment;
1. An individual illustrated report. (MLO 1,2, 3,4, 5)

Module abstract
This module introduces you to the wide range of activities that go together to make the busy world of architectural design and technology and to start you thinking of your future role within your chosen profession. This will be done by setting several observational and design related tasks either individually or in groups. They will be delivered in a mix of lectures, seminars, and where appropriate and smaller studio sessions. Verbal and visual communication skills will be developed with formative and summative feedback. Advice is available to help you develop and increase your understanding of architecture and the built environment. We will make use of the live campus buildings and city centre and highlight and encourage innovative and technological forms of communication. The tasks during teaching and assessment replicate architectural practice with the authenticity of the learning experience a key driver behind this module.
