What will I learn on this module?
This module will teach you how to expand your scientific research, science communication and team work skills through the collaborative research and presentation of a scientific research project. Lectures and seminars will be delivered teaching you how to research a scientific subject, how to work as team in doing this and how to condense large amounts of information into a concise message. All of these are essential core skills for a career in science.
How will I learn on this module?
Learning within this module will be based on a series of lectures and seminars teaching you the core skills you need to pass this module and that will be essential for your future career. You will have large group lectures but also small groups sessions with your allocated tutor to guide you and your team in the research of your selected topic. Your assessment with involve the research, preparation and submission of a short group video presentation covering your research area.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
All lecture materials will be made available on the e-learning portal including details of the module teaching team and their contact details should these be required. Additional reading will be made available to the students allowing them to further develop their own skills and depth of understanding. You will also be allocated a tutor for the purpose of this module who will guide you through the process of researching your subject area, condensing the key facts and prepare your presentation.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. You will gain knowledge and understanding into how to conduct scientific research, how to work as a team in doing so, how to condense information into a concise summary and how to prepare a video describing your field of research. In addition to this you will gain deeper knowledge and understanding in the topic area of your research.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
2. This module is designed to help you develop your intellectual and professional skill in the areas described above and to develop essential skills for a career in science.
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
3. You will gain in confidence and awareness of scientific research fields during your project, driving your curiosity in science and developing essential skill for your degree and career.
How will I be assessed?
Your assessment will involve the research, preparation and submission of a short group video presentation covering your research area. This will be prepared by you and your team and submitted via elp for assessment. You submission will include a bibliography of references, including details of how these were found and your view regarding the strength and/or reliability of the reference source (MLOs KU1, IPSA 2 and PVA3).
Formative assessment will be provided by an assigned academic staff member (personal tutor) who will support idea generation, research investigation, an initial review of draft presentation and appropriate feedback. Supported by MLOs KU1, IPSA2 and PVA3.

Module abstract
