Our AlumniThis research group has been emerging in the last REF cycle and is led by Professor Paul Potrac, who has been instrumental in providing direction and cohesion in the theme. Research in this theme critically examines the challenges and dilemmas associated with professional practice, the formulation and enactment of policy, and the well-being of those working and participating in sport and exercise.
Researchers in this group draw upon and integrate theory and methods from a variety of academic disciplines (i.e., sociology, social psychology, education and management). During this REF period, this group has developed its reputation for publishing high quality research in a variety of topics. These include the social, relational and emotional dimensions of sport coaching; the enactment of sport and leisure policies; and supporting the well-being and development of sport participants. The group has developed a strong relationship with external partners internationally (e.g., the European Union of Football Associations), nationally (e.g., The Football Association, Power to Change, The Talented Athlete Support Scheme, and the Scottish National Outdoor Training Centre), and regionally (e.g., Newcastle Falcons, Newcastle United F.C., and the Sunderland A.F.C. Foundation of Light). The group’s research is being used to support organisational policy making and the development of groups and individuals.
