Our Unit’s overarching emphasis on socially engaged forms of public-facing research and dissemination with stakeholders across cultural and creative sectors is exemplified in our continued partnership (established in 2012) with BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in the BALTIC x Northumbria University Institute. Harnessing skills and subject expertise from across the Unit’s research groupings and from the University as a whole, the BALTIC x Northumbria University Institute operates as a forum for drawing publics, practitioner and professional communities into forms of dialogue over the role of arts and cultural organisations and for forging new networks and research opportunities.
With Christine Borland as the first BALTIC Professor (2012–2017), the BALTIC x Northumbria University Institute brought the relationships between art, science, technology and ethics to public audiences through symposia, exhibitions and talk programmes. These collaborations continue, but the Institute has also built new synergies and expanded interdisciplinary capacity in tandem with national and international arts and cultural organisations. Since 2017, led by Andrea Phillips, its concern is with the role of cultural institutions and cultural producers in relation to socio/political and educational contexts. Within the Experimental Studio at B39, a contemporary arts hub in Newcastle city centre, staff from across the University meet to share their work informally through workshops, conferences and symposia with BALTIC curators and invited specialists and community members.
