BIOLOGICAL LAB

The Biological Lab support or inform nutrition trials through the use of systematic reviews/meta-analyses (to explore both causal and observational, as well as analytical biochemistry and a range of in vitro testing of bioactives. The team also have extensive experience of managing and running nutrition trials with a variety of health outcomes. Our analytical capability allows the assessment of most analytes of interest in human biological samples.

Our previous work on nutrition trials has particularly focused on the following areas:

  • Gut health (assessment of gut symptoms, appetite among other physiological parameters, as well as microbial ecosystems and metabolites).
  • Immune and inflammatory response (in response to food intake or as a key driver of the gut-brain axis).
  • Dietary assessment (for compliance and confounder tracking, as well as diet quality scoring).
  • Northumbria Metabolomic Core Facility (to explore metabolic profiles related to treatments or response to treatments).

Further detail of related research capacity are available here.
