Intensive Industrial Innovation Programme

The Intensive Industrial Innovation Programme (IIIP): Phase 3

The IIIP Programme supports innovation in Small or Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) with funding for collaboration with regional universities (Northumbria, Durham, Newcastle and Teesside) provided by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Participating SMEs receive part-funding for a PhD student to work on a business-led innovation project. The SME retains the intellectual property generated by the research to drive the development of new products or services. The PhD student gains experience of research in both an academic and an industry environment, harnessing innovation to tackle real-world challenges.

This multidisciplinary programme offers experience of research, translation and commercialisation, harnessing science and innovation to tackle real-world challenges. There are now 3 cohorts of IIIP students forming a community fostering collaboration and sharing experiences of grant funding, IP management and innovation. Students spend up to 49% of their time working within the SME, gaining experience of research in both a business and an academic environment.
