Carrie
is currently the Head of Northumbria Language Centre. This involves leading and
managing the University’s Academic English and Modern Foreign Languages
provision. She is responsible for overseeing programme and
module development and quality assurance processes for the Centre as well as managing,
supporting, and organising the work and development of the team of tutors and
associate lecturers that work in Languages. She also maintains the academic
oversight of the QA Pathway College based at Northumbria and a TNE
(Transnational Education) Foundation Programme with an overseas partner.
During
her time at Northumbria, which she began as a part-time tutor in 2001, she has taught
English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to a variety of students from many
countries on both pre-sessional and in-sessional programmes and on short
courses. Other roles have included coordinator of the pre-sessional summer school
programme and the coordinator of University’s in-sessional EAP provision. From
2013 to 2015, she was the Director of Placements for the Faculty of Arts Design
and Social Sciences working with colleagues to improve the employability of
graduates with the introduction and implementation of a University wide
placement process. She has also led the University through two successful
British Council inspection in November 2012 and August 2016.
She was External Examiner at Edinburgh University for
their EAP programmes from 2016-2020.
She gained Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
(SFHEA) in 2019.
She is currently working on completion of her PhD (due
March 2022) in which she is investigating International Postgraduate students
and their academic self-concept in relation to their study skills
Prior to her work at Northumbria, she lived and worked
on the island of Crete in Greece, where she taught English to children aged
11-18. She also lived and worked in Milan, Italy, where she taught beginners,
and business English to adults. On her return to the UK, she worked as a supply
teacher in secondary and middle schools in the North East. Before she began teaching,
she worked as a volunteer for the Iona community in Scotland.
Outside of work, she is a singer-song writer and
performer and a member of the Jazz.Coop in Newcastle, which was founded in 2014
and the first of its kind in the UK.
