Dr Craig Warren

Associate Professor

Department: Mechanical and Construction Engineering

I joined Northumbria University in 2017 following 7 years at The University of Edinburgh in which I held teaching and research roles. 

I hold degrees in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (BEng (Hons), 2003), and Civil Engineering (Ph.D., 2009) from The University of Edinburgh.

I have a specific interest in computational modelling and optimisation of electromagnetic (EM) sensing systems, such as Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR).

I am lead developer of open-source software - gprMax - which simulates electromagnetic wave propagation. It is the most widely used software for modelling GPR, and is also used for a diverse range of other applications in industry and academia.

I was a workgroup project leader in COST Action TU1208 “Civil Engineering Applications of GPR”.

I am a Chartered Engineer (CEng), Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE), Fellow of The Higher Education Academy (FHEA), Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (MIMechE), and Member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG).

I am also a petrol-head and wannabe rock drummer.

I carry out fundamental and applied research on sensing technologies for infrastructure and geophysical applications. I have specific interests in computational modelling and optimisation of electromagnetic (EM) sensing systems, and am lead developer of gprMax – one of the most widely used simulation tools for EM subsurface modelling.

I also have research interests in the fields of engineering education and technology enhanced learning.
