Prof Ioannis Vogiatzis

Professor

Department: Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation

Ioannis -Vogiatzis ,-Northumbria -University -webOver the past five years he has been a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Applied Physiology (an official journal of the American Physiological Society) and the journal of Respiratory Physiology and Neurobiology.

Ioannis is considered an opinion leader in the area of Pulmonary Rehabilitation holding the Chair of the Rehabilitation and Chronic Care group of the European Respiratory Society (ERS). He has contributed to three Position Statements of the American Thoracic and European Respiratory Societies on Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Skeletal Muscle Dysfunction and Daily Physical Activity in patients with chronic lung diseases.  Recently on behalf of the American and European Respiratory Societies, he co-chaired an international task force producing a Policy Statement for enhancing implementation, use and delivery of Pulmonary Rehabilitation globally.

Besides his background in Physiology and Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Ioannis has a long truck working and studying elite athletes.  For eight years he served as a member of the Medical Commission of the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and participated as head physiologist for the Greek Sailing Federation in the Olympic Games in Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004). He has published several papers on the physiological limitations of performance of Olympic Class sailors.

Ioannis has a very good record of research funding generation mainly from EU and pharmaceutical industry sources on projects covering aspects of physical activity, pulmonary rehabilitation, telemedicine, respiratory mechanics, phenotypic and genotypic skeletal muscle profiling and computed aided rehabilitation. He has published over 100 papers having an H index of 30. He has made a chapter contribution to the contemporary version of the “Textbook of Physiology” (Comprehensive Physiology) and successfully supervised several Ph.D. (n=7) and M.Sc. (n=10) students, many of whom have received prestigious awards at international congresses.

I am an internationally recognised scientist in the area of pulmonary rehabilitation in respiratory disease. I contribute my expertise to educational and research curriculum development activities undertaken by the European Respiratory Society (ERS) - the largest Respiratory Medicine Society in the world. I have co-authored 6 Official Position Statements on clinical exercise and pulmonary rehabilitation in respiratory patients, which have been published by the American Thoracic and European Respiratory Societies. The majority of my publications are in high impact factor medical journals, making an important contribution to the area of pulmonary rehabilitation in COPD. I am the Secretary of the Respiratory, Clinical Care and Physiology Assembly of the ERS, a member for the COPD Development group of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Rehabilitation Programme, and member of the Specialist Advisory Group for Pulmonary Rehabilitation of the British Thoracic Society. I hold an Honorary Professorship (Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing and Rehabilitation) with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, which allows me to deploy cardiopulmonary exercise testing and rehabilitation research projects and services within the NHS Trust.
