Dr Patrizio Martinelli

Assistant Professor

Patrizio M. Martinelli is Assistant Professor of Interior Architecture and Architecture at Northumbria University (Newcastle upon Tyne, UK), Department of Architecture and the Built Environment.

Before joining Northumbria, from 2017 to 2022 Patrizio was Assistant Professor at Miami University, Department of Architecture+Interior Design, in Oxford (Ohio, USA). From 2000 to 2016 he worked at IUAV University of Venice, Department of Architecture, Construction, Conservation, with teaching (at undergraduate and graduate level) and research roles, with grants from the European Union and the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research. He has also been studio tutor at University of Bologna/Cesena and University of Parma. He is guest lecturer and tutor at Münster School of Architecture (Germany) and taught workshops at BTU Cottbus (Germany) and the Escuela de Arquitectura, Toledo (Spain).

Patrizio studied at IUAV University of Venice, where he earned a Master’s degree in Architecture (five year program) and a PhD in Architectural Composition. In 2018 he was awarded with the Italian National Scientific Qualification as Associate Professor by ANVUR (National Agency for the Evaluation of University and Research).

His teaching and research focus on modernism, domestic/urban interiors, adaptive reuse, and the concept of theatricality in architecture. These investigations and his creative work on collage/montage techniques has been presented in international conferences, published in monographs and journals, and showcased in galleries throughout Europe, UK and the United States.
