Rick`s PhD investigated the role of deliberate practice in developing elite adolescent golfers and his research outputs to date have examined factors that aid and constrain the attainment of elite adolescent sports performance.

Rick has both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching responsibilities and undertakes an active role in promoting innovative and research informed teaching and learning methods across both the department and wider university community. Rick`s student centred approach is tailored to maximise the overall student experience at every stage and create a teaching and learning environment that develops a range of academic, professional, personal and employability skills.

Rick is proactive in terms of his own continuing professional development and regularly presents at nationally recognised conferences and workshops related to learning and teaching enhancement. Rick is passionate about encouraging student learning in all forms and contexts and fully engages students in dialogue about their learning needs and styles. This is evidenced in his highly interactive teaching approaches and use of students as key collaborators in his research initiatives.

Rick is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has extensive experience of undertaking community based sports coaching projects with children. In his spare time, Rick competes nationally for Sale Harriers Manchester Athletics Club and is a volunteer grass roots football coach.
