Law student essay has the write stuff

29th November 2019

An essay-writing competition run by Newcastle Law Society has been won by a Northumbria student with a moving and personal account of how a solicitor helped her family.

Northumbria Law School student Chloe McGlade was presented with award at the Newcastle Law Society Dinner – a prestigious annual event for the region’s legal community. The competition drew numerous entries from students across the region. Participants were asked to write an essay exploring the theme of what makes a good lawyer.

Commenting on her success, Chloe said: “Winning the award was such a surreal feeling. My essay was based on a family event which led to an interest in medical negligence. My story was a very personal one and to be acknowledged by an organisation as prestigious as Newcastle Law Society was overwhelming. Being presented the award at the Society’s annual dinner was such a rewarding experience, I felt so welcomed and it was such a privilege to be invited to be a part of that night.”

Chris Hugill, Ward Hadaway law firm and current President of Newcastle Law Society, paid tribute to Chloe’s “lovely and moving essay”.

He added: “Chloe’s work was the outstanding entry out of some excellent essays. We wanted to know what, in the mind of the writer, made a good lawyer. As judges we were hoping that the best essays would display some deeper motivation that would help sustain them when all the hard work and examinations may otherwise seem too much. Chloe’s essay did not disappoint. It was inspirational and demonstrated clearly the importance of a role model in the solicitor who helped her family in its time of great need.”

Chloe, who is in her final year of study at Northumbria, aims to pursue a career medical negligence law when she graduates.
