Nearly 400 students attended a graduation ceremony on 25th February 2021, at Business Management School (BMS), Sri Lanka, a long-standing partner of Northumbria University for 20 years.
Despite the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, BMS were able to safely host four physical graduation ceremonies in line with the Sri Lankan government guidelines.
BMS were also able to organise traditional activities for students to enjoy in order to commend their achievements, with family and friends tuning in virtually to watch live on the BMS Facebook page and experience this important milestone.
Professor Jon Reast, Pro Vice-Chancellor for International at Northumbria University, recorded a speech to commemorate the occasion.
He said: “I was delighted to take part in celebrating the graduation of students from our extremely valuable and long-standing partner BMS in Sri Lanka. I would have dearly loved to have been with our students and colleagues from BMS in person, but a speech delivered virtually was the next best thing.
“The students studying for Northumbria degrees with BMS are of the highest quality, gain excellent results and career outcomes, but have faced many challenges over the last year. On that basis, I would particularly like to congratulate them for their hard work, resilience, and determination in successfully completing their studies. This of course would not have been possible without the excellent teaching, support, and guidance from our colleagues at BMS and Northumbria.
“These exceptional students, like those graduating before them, will go on to make a significant contribution to the Sri Lankan economy, as well as to the economies within the surrounding region. Here at Northumbria, we are all keen to see their careers flourish in the coming years.”
A total of 369 students graduated across the four ceremonies on a range of Business and Applied Science courses, including:
BSc (Hons) Business with International Management
BSc (Hons) Business with Financial Management
BSc (Hons) Business with HR Management
BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences
BSc (Hons) Biotechnology
Northumbria University’s partnership with BMS has produced over 2,500 graduates, working closely with Northumbria’s Newcastle Business School and more recently, the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.
BMS has developed its partnership with Northumbria University over many years and allows students from Sri Lanka to study in their home country. They are currently exploring further opportunities to develop relationships in more subject areas.
