Career Path: Documentary Filmmaker | Director of Filmit UK
Location: Manchester, UK

I’m a documentary filmmaker primarily focused on geopolitics, international affairs, and cultural identity. While studying at Northumbria, I founded my production company, Filmit UK, which now works with clients like BMW, the NHS, National Rail, and John Lewis. Alongside commercial work, I produce independent documentaries commissioned by organisations such as the British Library and COPA90, with work featured in exhibitions and museums across the UK.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

I wanted to live and study in Newcastle, and Northumbria offered the ideal balance - a flexible course that combined theory with the opportunity and encouragement to set up and run a business alongside studying.

What was the best thing about your course?

I met friends for life, and the course allowed a lot of freedom while actively encouraging travel. That flexibility gave me the chance to pursue my first opportunities in travel filmmaking, which ultimately launched my career.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/give your career an edge?

Not only did it give me the freedom to start Filmit while completing my degree, but working with the Enterprise Team also provided a valuable support network that helped guide me through the early stages of entrepreneurship.

What was the best thing about your course?

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now throughout your career?

Honestly, it was the confidence that no one really has it all figured out - and that’s fine. I just keep trying, failing, learning, and showing up. Through my entrepreneurial experiments I quickly learnt that If you keep knocking on doors and putting yourself out there, things will start to happen.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

Just everything to do with living in Newcastle - I adore everything about the city.

What advice would you give somebody who is thinking of studying at Northumbria?

Say yes to opportunities - even the small ones. Northumbria gives you the space to explore, experiment, and build something real alongside your studies. Make the most of that freedom, and don’t be afraid to start before you feel ready.
