Nicholas Foster

Career Path: Director of Avla Business Services
Location: Stevenage, Hertfordshire, UK

I obtained LL.Hons Degree in 1998 and was called to the Bar in 2002, having successfully completed the Bar Vocational Course at the Inns of Court School of Law.  I am a member of Middle Temple Inn. I became a Certified Information Privacy Practitioner in April 2024 and is member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals. I enjoy conducting research to solve novel legal issues. This coupled with my analytical approach are the key drivers for the decision to develop a specialism in data protection compliance.

What are you doing now?              Nicholas Foster

I am managing director of my limited company which provides data protection compliance consultancy services. In addition to this, I support students as an Associate Instructor on short courses being delivered by the London School of Economics and Political Sciences. I also serve as social services complaints investigating officer and panel chair on statutory reviews panels for local authority children's services.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

Northumbria has an unrivalled reputation and track record in Data Protection Law and Information Governance.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

Very thought-provoking and engaging lectures, constructive and practical feedback .

How connected was your course with industry?

The practical skills which I acquired from the course enabled me to develop workable and pragmatic solutions for my employers and customers.

What was the best thing about your course?

Practical application of legal theory and principles.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/ give your career an edge?

Acquiring qualifications from Northumbria helped to bolster my academic credentials and set me apart from competitors.

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now throughout your career?

The course helped to hone my research techniques, sharpened my analytical skills and strengthened my critical analysis abilities.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

I enjoyed networking with and learning from other students/professionals.

What advice would you give somebody who is considering studying at Northumbria?

Don't delay. You will acquire key skills which will serve you well and propel your career goals.
