James Dawson

Career Path: Founder & Consultant - JD Commercial Consulting Limited
Location: Tynemouth, UK

I have had a fascination with how economies and businesses work all my life. I was fortunate to get a great grounding in global business during my time at Formica and it was when my leadership career began that I really thrived.

As a leader I really enjoyed strategic planning, coaching and leading individuals and teams for growth and implementing solutions to challenging situations. When I left Formica, I chose to gain experience in different sectors and solutions to improve my skills and knowledge.

What are you doing now? James Dawson

When the opportunity arose to start my own consultancy business JD Commercial Consulting Limited, in association with Hovingh & Partners (a global provider of sales and negotiation excellence programs), I couldn't resist!

My business allows me to focus on the things I value the most in work life - coaching, mentoring, supporting organisations and leaders to effectively grow their businesses. I have learned a lot as a founder, there are pros and cons to both corporate and entrepreneurial ventures but ultimately so long as I am empowering sales teams, individuals and leaders to be their best selves then I will, be fulfilled.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

Northumbria has a strong business school and the Economics program has always been highly regarded and I loved the idea of staying in the North East where I could balance everything yet still get out into the World.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

I really enjoyed my time at Northumbria, the seminars and lectures were very informative and the staff on campus were of a very high calibre. There was a real sense of team and support and I am still in touch with many alumni and professors alike today.

What was the best thing about your course?

The mix of seminars. lectures, coursework and content brought a very rounded learning experience.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/ give your career an edge?

I felt prepared for business. I think Economics is a great grounding for most business careers and especially commercial leadership. I feel confident making informed decisions on strategy and understanding the customer in no small part due to my social sciences background.

Which skills/ knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now throughout your career?

Econometrics is tough! But it helped me to consciously model and analyse everything I do in business. Equally macro and micro economics together helped me to understand the impact of decisions on individuals, businesses and all involved.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

Growing up! Being independent and planning for my future. Meeting and experiencing new people, cultures and getting involved.

What advice would you give somebody who is considering studying at Northumbria?

Go for it! University in general is still a great choice, Northumbria is a great place to study, grow up and experience a new approach to life as a new adult.

How would you describe your time at Northumbria in three words?

Fun, challenging, rewarding.
