At Northumbria’s School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation, we’re here to help people live healthier, longer, more active lives – from early development through to elite performance.

Bringing together a powerful mix of disciplines including physiotherapy, nutrition, sport science, coaching and management – we take a whole-body, whole-life approach to human performance and health.

Whether you’re supporting someone to regain mobility, working in sporting events or organisations, engaged in sport in the local community, or working with a professional sports team your learning here has the power to transform lives.

TACKLING GLOBAL CHALLENGES

Our students explore how to move, fuel, care for and optimise the body and mind – with benefits that go beyond the physical. Our research tackles global challenges such as inactivity, health inequality, and the changing landscape of professional sport. You’ll learn from world-leading experts, with the freedom to shape a degree around your interests. Our wide range of modules offers you a personalised programme of study, and our close-knit school community provides a sense of belonging from day one.

LEARNING BY EXPERIENCE

Hands-on, experiential learning is central to everything we do. In Physiotherapy this is through immersive practice placements, practical classes, simulations, and applied practice settings.

In Sport programmes, experiential learning takes a dynamic form – ranging from lab and sports hall sessions to class-based practicals, case-based learning, or service-based learning, projects and work experience.

Our diverse learning approach offers varied assessments that reflect real-world contexts in sport, exercise and rehabilitation.

SET UP FOR SUCCESS

We have links with every major professional sporting organisation in the region – including Newcastle United, Sunderland AFC, Middlesbrough FC, Newcastle Eagles, and Newcastle Falcons.

We are one of only three affiliate training centres for the UK Strength and Conditioning Association and are CIMSPA members. We collaborate with NHS Trusts, local councils, charities and global research networks. As an Accredited Centre for UK Coaching, we deliver internationally recognised qualifications and CPD courses.

So, you could gain professional qualifications alongside your degree or take part in international placements from Europe to Australia.

At Northumbria, you won’t just study the theory of performance or rehabilitation. You’ll live it. And you’ll graduate ready to lead the way.
