Responsible Tourism

Responsible tourism is about all stakeholders (that is producers and consumers of tourism) taking responsibility for the consequences of their actions. This involves mass tourism as well as more niche forms such as ecotourism, adventure and ‘alternative’ tourism.

Responsible Tourism positions tourism production and consumption ecologically in terms of how well it interacts with the natural, social and economic integrities of the destinations visited and in terms of the integrities of the business and travel processes that make those visits available to tourists.

Recent Research Projects

This project was commissioned by Northumberland County Council and the Institute of Local Governance in 2014 to examine all available research on the impacts of wind farms on tourism in the UK in order to establish definitive, evidence-based conclusions on this important issue.

Dr Jaqueline Holland: The Understanding and Implementation of Responsible Tourism for UK Adventure Tour Operators

This 2014 Doctor of Business Administration thesis examined UK based, small to medium sized, tour operators operating in international markets to establish their approaches toward, and implementations of, responsible tourism practices in remote destinations in developed and developing countries.
