Theoretical Linguistics and Communication

Researchers in this group explore and develop understanding of areas of linguistic knowledge and processing, including semantics and pragmatics, the nature of communication and processing in a range of contexts, and the evolution of language and communication.

Recent research activities have focused on a range of areas of linguistic knowledge and processing, from a variety of perspectives, including versions of Chomskyan generative grammar, relevance theory, cognitive grammar, usage-based approaches, and (critical) discourse analysis.

Recent projects have focused on: the pragmatic processes involved in the production, interpretation and evaluation of texts; narratives in medical contexts; the construction and attribution of identities; individual education and literacy-related differences in linguistic knowledge; the origins and evolution of language and communication.
