Arts

From creating fine art to conserving it; from animation to film, theatre and television, through to arts management and teaching, our Arts department is a dynamic and stimulating environment to study a wide range of courses. Learn from world-renowned experts in Fine Art, Performance and Visual Cultures.

Matters pertaining to social justice underpin activity in the Department. We collaborate with our local, national, and international communities to understand the impact of inequalities. Through creative practices, such as works of art, film, media, and theatre and performance, we imagine better futures and lead on making them a reality. We do this through our expertise in regeneration and with our partners in the creative sectors. We are specialists in understanding the importance of material and cultural history, subcultures, marginalised groups, and individuals. We understand the power and importance of representation. Creative practices enable individuals to question how things function as well as providing the means through which to make changes to society. Students and researchers at Northumbria are well-equipped to make timely interventions in response to twenty-first century grand challenges. We are committed to developing the next generation of creative makers and leaders.

In addition to our Newcastle campus, we have campuses in London and Amsterdam. We also deliver programmes with institutional partners in Singapore, Indonesia, and China.  We provide opportunities for our students to study abroad and support international students who choose to study in Newcastle. The work we undertake as a department understands the importance of the relationship between the global and the local.

A large proportion of our students are from the North East and live and work here when they graduate. Our graduates make significant contributions to the social, cultural, and political futures of the region. The work our graduates undertake is varied, stretching far beyond the cultural sectors into areas such as business, health and life sciences, politics, education, and digital technologies. Our graduates are highly regarded by employers. As creative makers and thinkers, they are experienced at working collaboratively and inclusively. They are effective problem solvers and the transferable skills they acquire on their courses make them versatile team players.

Our programmes provide opportunities for our students to work directly with a range of employers. We have established partnerships with the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Tyneside Cinema, and Live Theatre. We facilitate internships, placements, and live brief opportunities for our students as an integral part of our degrees.

Research enriches all our activity within the department. We boast a vibrant and exciting research community. In the Research Excellence Framework 2021 (REF), Arts and Design ranked 4th nationally for QR Power and 4th nationally for Research Power. The strength of our research impacts the communities we serve and informs our approach to learning and teaching.
