Can you take us back to results day? What were your initial feelings and your child’s when their original university plans didn’t work out as expected?
Results day was a real emotional rollercoaster for Tianna and for us as her parents. She’d hardly slept the night before and was up early in the morning. We all went to school together as a family to collect her results; it felt like a big moment. Tianna already had a clear plan in mind; she’d visited her chosen university, loved how close it was to home, and we’d even looked around the halls together.
So when she didn’t quite get the results needed for her first choice, she was stunned. Her plans suddenly felt up in the air, and it was a lot to take in. Her dad and I were incredibly proud of what she achieved—her results were still excellent—but in that moment, it was hard for her to see past the disappointment, especially after all the effort she’d put in and the excitement she’d felt about what was ahead.
It was tough seeing her so upset, and we definitely felt a bit helpless at first. But once the shock passed, we shifted into solution mode. We talked through other options, got advice, and tried to keep the focus on the bigger picture—that this was just a different path, not the end of the road.
From your perspective as a parent, what were your biggest concerns or fears about the idea of using UCAS Clearing at that point?
From our perspective as parents, our biggest concern with UCAS Clearing was the uncertainty—it felt like everything we had planned for suddenly became unknown. We worried about whether there would be good course options still available, and if Tianna would end up at a university that truly suited her. As parents, we were a bit anxious about how Clearing worked in practice—how quickly things move.
However, Tianna took the lead in the Clearing process, spoke with the university on the phone, and found the staff to be very friendly and understanding. Her decision was made confidently, and we felt reassured by the support she received.
Most of all, we just wanted to ensure she still felt confident, valued, and excited about her future, even if it looked different from what she had originally imagined.
How did you and your child, working together, come to the decision that Clearing was the right path forward?
We sat down with one of Tianna’s teachers to talk things through calmly and clearly. We reassured her that there were still so many fantastic opportunities out there, and that this wasn’t the end of her journey—just a different path than she originally planned. Together, we began exploring Clearing options, focusing on Law, which has always been her passion.
Tianna really took the lead, but we were right by her side—helping with research, encouraging her to ask questions, and keeping an open mind. When she found a course that genuinely sparked her interest and a university that felt like the right fit, it became clear that Clearing wasn’t a second-best option at all—it was simply a new beginning.
