EF3061 - An introduction to Academic Projects and Working Collaboratively in Intercultural Contexts

What will I learn on this module?

The aim of the module is to develop your interaction and mediation skills, as well as your sociolinguistic awareness. You will learn key concepts and vocabulary about academic projects and embark on a collaborative project that reflects on the concept of culture. The collaborative project will develop skills in group work and your ability to communicate ideas effectively in English. Using reflective model(s), you will continually reflect on your communication skills and how culture impacts on the ability to communicate effectively, fostering independence for developing your English language skills and engaging with peers on your chosen degree programme.

How will I learn on this module?

Learning on the module will largely be student-led, with your tutor acting as facilitator, guiding your learning in class and setting independent collaborative tasks for outside of class. The focus will be on students to complete tasks together to construct meaning, in addition to working on group projects both within and outside of class time. You will engage in ongoing reflection for continuous improvement and peer support.

You will have access to texts and materials on the module Blackboard site.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

Formative assessment process

You will engage in ongoing reflection on your communication skills and provide and receive feedback on your project progress.

Summative assessment process

You will present your project as a group, in addition to completing a reflective statement on your learning.

Module abstract

This module focuses on developing your awareness of effective communication within intercultural contexts, key to success at a UK university. The module consolidates your learning across the programme, giving you the opportunity to put into practice the skills you have learnt on other modules and to reflect on your ability to apply such skills. Through a collaborative project, you will navigate group dynamics and intercultural communication to research and present your findings together. Continuous reflection on the impact of language and culture on communication will foster independence and prepare you for learning within a diverse learning community. The module will also provide you with some key concepts and vocabulary to understand the nature of project work at a UK university, preparing you for your academic journey.
