AP0712 - Professional Nutrition Skills

What will I learn on this module?

You will learn how to apply for funding to support a theoretical nutrition based health promotion campaign or public engagement activity. You will also gain valuable communication skills from presenting your ideas and funding bid in the form of a poster to an audience. The module will help to support you to develop a range of knowledge skills, behaviours, attributes and attitudes which will enable you to be successful not just in employment but in life. You will also gain an understanding of the AfN Standards of Ethics, Conduct and Performance. Strict adherence of these standards is expected from all Associate and Registered Nutritionists, enabling you to sustain your own continued professional development.

The transferable skills that you will gain in this module will include critical thinking, record-keeping, problem solving, independent learning, and communication of ideas to various audiences and project management as well as development of your emotional intelligence.

How will I learn on this module?

The principal focus of this module will provide you with the ability to learn and gain professional skills in the nutrition sector such as presenting and communicating ideas and engaging with the public. THe module will be underpinned by professional skills, independent learning and support from academic tutors.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported by guidance from a tutor although the principal focus of this module will be guided independent learning. A lead lecture will introduce the module structure, timetable and assign guidance tutors.

You will work independently to develop your own health promotion campaign or public engagement activity and you will attend arranged sessions with your tutor to discuss your ideas. Your campaign or activity will be written up in the form of a funding bid to support the activity. The activity and funding bid will be presented as a poster to an audience. A short series of seminars and IT workshops will help you start your campaign/event. Thereafter you will be expected to work independently using all available facilities to amass relevant information on your chosen nutrition activity and funding bid.

Formative feedback will be provided from academic tutors during the sessions that you will arrange. The formative feedback provided from your tutor will help guide you with your funding bid as well as to provide you with support for the organisation and development of the campaign.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
1. You will relate academic theory learnt as part of the taught degree to real situations in the workplace and in the research environment. An understanding of the AfN Standards of Ethics, Conduct and Performance and strict adherence of these standards is expected from all Associate and Registered Nutritionists, enabling you to sustain your own continued professional development.

1. You will learn independently, as well as in a group, enhancing your existing professional and personal skills and developing new ones to a high level, enabling you to sustain your own continued professional development

How will I be assessed?

Assessment of this module will focus on the development and then presentation of a funding bid related to setting up a nutrition focused health promotion campaign or public engagement event.

Component A of the assessment (30%) will comprise the development process and final funding bid for the activity.
Component B (70%) will assess the communication of your health promotion/public engagement event ideas presented in the poster.

In a competitive job market, gaining professional skills is key to a graduate securing employment. During the ‘Professional Nutrition Skills’ module, you will be supported in developing effective professional practices through generic and specific employability skills such as personal responsibility and enterprise, self-reliance and self-direction, and for seeking out future employment opportunities.
