PE7051 - Facilities and Asset Management

What will I learn on this module?

You will learn how to identify and appraise the key management stages in the operation of property; compare and appraise techniques; categorise and analyse strategic, tactical and operational dimensions of facilities and asset management. You will explore the options for managing the non-core business of an organisation in support of business aims. Promotion of ethically correct and environmentally sound management of people, premises, resources, services and the working environment.

How will I learn on this module?

The module is delivered entirely online via our electronic learning portal (elp). You will interact with a range of materials on the module site. The module home page provides you with quick access to detailed information about the module in an interactive, easily accessible format. The teaching materials support your learning. The module delivers flexible, interactive learning materials, accessible in a variety of formats such as audio and video presentations, and hard copies. Tasks to extend and test your learning are interspersed within the learning materials. A range of different tasks, with formative feedback, are aimed at supporting your learning style. In addition to this you will be encouraged to utilise peer to peer support opportunities through the use of elp supported platforms for interaction or, if you choose to, external student supported platforms. Each session is supported by directed reading accessed through the electronic reading list and links within the weekly learning material.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be an autonomous, self-motivated learner within a supportive distance learning environment. The online module sessions and interactive tasks form the cornerstone for supporting you during your study. Academic support is available from the teaching team via the online discussion forum allowing interaction with the tutors and fellow learners. An online live question and answer session is available prior to submission of your assessed work. Focused academic support coupled with timely formative and summative feedback should enable you to meet your full academic potential within this module.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment: there are a range of tasks embedded within the online sessions. Formative feedback will be provided, where appropriate, in a number of ways including directly upon completion, through interaction on the discussion board and video tutorial sessions. This timely feedback will assist in consolidating your learning as you move through the module.


The module will be summative assessed with the completion of one written report. This assessment will reflect both the practical and theoretical aspects of the module. The reports will focus on particular areas of learning outcomes that require demonstration of the application of learning materials to practical tasks.

Feedback will be provided on the summative assessments via a standard feedback pro-forma and also via the eLP/gradebook.

Module abstract

This module aims to develop your knowledge in order to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of built assets and how these support respective organisations and businesses core functions. It introduces you to strategic decision-making by exploring the concepts and theories around the management of organisations’ non-core business activities.

Through teaching and independent research you will be able to identify, analyse and apply key theories in the sustainable operation of property, these include outsourcing, procurement, tendering, strategic asset planning. You will develop an in depth comprehension of strategic portfolio management. At the conclusion of the module you will have the skills and knowledge to critically examine alternative contractual arrangements, examine information needs and legislative constraints, which relate to Facilities and Asset Management.
