What will I learn on this module?
This module will critically explore and promote physical and mental wellbeing in the context of long term conditions. There are an increasing number of people living with long term conditions, which impact both physical and mental health. Physical and mental health are intertwined, and this module will consider the biopsychosocial needs of individuals and the influence of living with multiple comorbidities. The consideration of long-term condition development will be deliberated and the role of physiotherapy in their management will be explored and developed. Models and theories of behaviour change will be critically explored and applied to the management. Exploration of current research will be a central tenet of this module and continuing development of a critical approach to literature appraisal will be integrated alongside the management approaches.
How will I learn on this module?
Teaching will be delivered via a combination of approaches. Practical workshops will encourage practical skill and technique acquisition and seminar workshops will promote discussion and understanding of conceptual frameworks in public health and research appraisal. Occasional lecture-based teaching within seminars will be included to help introduce key principles. Content will be supported by directed and independent study. A range of online resources has been developed to facilitate key skills furthering knowledge of the research process and tools to assist in critical appraisal.

How will I be supported academically on this module?
Module information, assessment requirements and expectations, and important module announcements will be made through the eLP. Material to support your learning will be uploaded in advance of sessions. You will be signposted to content via the module booklet and also verbally during timetabled sessions. Online resources are available through the University learning platform and are used to support your directed learning, demonstrate the required level of detail and content required. The Module Leader is there to support you with any queries that you may have about the module content. You will have the opportunity to receive formative feedback on skill development during the module, and you will receive feedback on summative work to help you identify areas of strength and areas for development. There will be the opportunity to discuss your feedback with a member of staff during taught sessions or by face to face or online tutorials as necessary. There are also further academic skills support available from the University Library services. You will have the opportunity to practice and frame skills (practical and intellectual) and you are again, encouraged to evidence these in the compilation of an e-skills portfolio in a format of your choosing to showcase your learning within the academic setting. The portfolio, does not form part of the summative assessment and should act as a vehicle for reflection on your skills and further development as a professional.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Discuss and critique the physical and mental health impact of long-term conditions and the management of health and wellbeing including behavioural change.
2. Discuss and integrate the principles of management for a long-term condition with health promotion strategies including self-management and physical activity.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
1. Critically select and appraise relevant literature that influences a management approach for a long-term condition.
2. Demonstrate an evidence-based approach to the management of a selected long-term condition.
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
1. Consider and reflect upon social, cultural, economic and personal factors and their impact on health and wellbeing.
How will I be assessed?
Formative assessment opportunities are provided within workshops staged at points across the module. Feedback as an inclusive activity by students, peers, and staff will be undertaken.
The module summative assessment will be an evidence-based assignment to discuss and critically evaluate an aspect of public health, relating to the physiotherapy management of a long-term condition.
Individual written feedback will be provided with the opportunity to discuss with a module tutor. General cohort feedback will be provided via the e-learning platform.

Module abstract
Health and wellbeing represent a state of physical, mental and social wellbeing in the absence of illness, disease and distress. This module seeks to explore factors that foster understanding of how social, cultural and economic factors influence this state and thereby integrate this learning to improve, educate and support individuals and groups in promoting health. The module aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to help people to take greater control over their health. An increasingly large proportion of the population are living with at least one long term condition; the module also considers approaches to help support individuals with long term conditions through educational strategies and therapeutic management through a lens of patient-centred care.
