What will I learn on this module?
Building on your existing knowledge and skills you will enhance your development and become an agile skilled practitioner in your relevant Field of nursing. You will be learning to apply high level communication skills, previous knowledge and experience as well as your advanced knowledge of nursing procedures to prepare you for autonomous practice. History taking skills, will be developed and used as a framework for enhanced assessment and care of people of all ages
You will continue to have the opportunity to practice such skills in a simulated clinical setting utilising a range of specialist technologies such as human patient simulators and immersive interactive environments underpinned by online learning resources contained within the BlackBoard Ultra site. You will bring your developed communication skills, as well as previous knowledge and experience, to learning advanced nursing interventions in support of your leadership and management placement and the requirements for being a new registrant.
A range of dynamic learning opportunities both in the simulated and real-life practice setting will help to generate evidence, which will aid you in the completion of your Ongoing Record of Achievement, demonstrating that you are capable of a high standard of competent, safe and independent nursing practice and celebrating your achievements.
How will I learn on this module?
Throughout this module you will be engaged in a variety of learning and teaching approaches. The module will be delivered using a blend of web-based resources, and face-to-face in-class sessions underpinned by the ‘flipped classroom’ approach (Bergman & Sams, 2012). This approach will enable you to engage with technology enhanced learning, with the provision of links to the web-based resources and other useful materials, along with a combination of pre-recorded lecture videos and interactive e-learning packages. Flipping the classroom enables you to engage in both directed and self-directed study outside of formal teaching sessions as preparatory work for facilitated skills-based sessions. Engagement with this activity is essential for your active participation in the facilitated sessions. These sessions will include individual work, group discussion and simulated practice, where you will be encouraged to develop a greater understanding of the complexity of innovative nursing practice.
During your time in university you will work with and learn from your peers and be provided with the opportunity to link with fellow students in other fields of nursing. This introduces you to the task-work component of teamwork and reflects the realities of delivering care for people in a modern NHS. We work with a model of peer-learning (Learning Leaders) from previous cohorts who will share their experiences and advice.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will be supported by a module team of specialist nursing lecturers. You will receive ongoing guidance and feedback to ensure you are able to engage with the concept of safe nursing practice and physical and mental health assessment of people of all ages in line with the academic rigour of the module.
You will also be supported via the modules Online Supported Learning systems in addition to face-to- face teaching and more formal classroom arrangements. You will also learn together through peer support, engaging in skill rehearsal in preparation for your history taking Observed Structured Clinical Examination. You will also have access to a digital education resource will be used to support your learning in relation to medicines to support your ongoing development of safe medicine practice.
Contact with the module team is available in person, via telephone, email and through Blackboard Ultra. Skills Plus, the university library’s collection of online learning materials can be used to support the development of your academic skills. Further support for your learning is provided with a 24 hour IT Helpline and the student support and wellbeing service at Northumbria are excellent points of contact for assistance for queries regarding disability, faith, counselling, mental health support, finance and welfare issues. You can access these services via email on your student portal, by telephone or through the help desk staff based within university libraries.
You will also support each other via peer support, through engaging in discussion and debate to enhance your learning. Additional relevant materials will be available via BlackBoard Ultra. These will include the electronic reading list, PowerPoint presentations, recorded lectures and interactive learning packages. The university libraries at both Coach Lane Campus and City Campus offer an extensive collection of material, both hard copy and electronic, access to international databases and training in information retrieval. Additional relevant materials, including the electronic reading list and other teaching and learning methods, will be available Blackboard Ultra/library services to enhance and support your learning. All support will be in line with any Student Accessibility Plan guidance.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Critically analyse contemporary evidence based, patient assessment skills and nursing interventions.
Intellectual / Professional Skills & Abilities:
2. Demonstrate critical application of evidence based assessment and intervention based nursing skills
3. Demonstrate the ability to perform drug calculations and history taking skills in a simulated environment to aid the assessment process and ongoing delivery of care.

4. Critically consider the political, psychological, sexual, socio-cultural, legal and ethical issues relating to the application of nursing skills.
5. Demonstrate critical application of transferability of knowledge and skills within a context of inter- professional and inter- agency working.
How will I be assessed?
Formative Assessment: You will have the opportunity to be formatively assessed on your drug calculation and history taking skills, with the latter through simulation-based experience in preparation for your calculation examination and Observed Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).Peer feedback will be given to facilitate skills development.
(MLO 1,2,3,5).
Summative Assessment:
This will be in 2 parts, an unseen written examination ( 60 minutes duration) and a three station Observed Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) (40 minutes duration)..
Part 1: 30% weighting.
The exam will consist of 20 drug calculations. You must achieve 100% in your drug calculations; this will equate to 30% of the overall module mark. (MLO 3)
Part 2: 70% weighting.
Your Observed Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) assessment will consist of a three stations (40 minutes duration).
Station 1. You will be assessed on your history taking and problem-solving skills based on one of four case histories reflecting your field of nursing (15 minutes).
Station 2. You will construct a treatment plan identifying ongoing nursing investigations and interventions to deliver high quality care (15 minutes).
Station 3 In discussion with the assessor you will demonstrate underpinning knowledge of pathophysiology and ongoing care considerations (10 minutes).
The OSCE will be marked out of 100% and you will need to achieve a minimum pass mark of 50%. This will equate to 70% of the overall module mark.

Module abstract
This module will consolidate the skills that you have developed in year one. Within this module you will gain the skills needed to develop as a future nurse who is able to effectively combine knowledge values and skills as you focus on the nursing skills required for contemporary and innovative nursing practice to lead excellence in nursing. You will continue to have the opportunity to practice your skills in a simulated environment and be encouraged to continue peer assisted learning as you develop to an independent learner. You will enhance your assessment and communication skills through participating in history taking practice and application of numeracy skills focusing on people of all ages in all settings. You will be encouraged to identify the evidence that underpins good practice, to further reflect on your own abilities and to develop increasing confidence and autonomy. Within the module you will demonstrate resilience, tenacity and emotional intelligence and be capable of explaining the rationale that influences your judgments and decisions in routine, complex and challenging situations.
