HR9738 - Leadership for Responsible Change

What will I learn on this module?

This module critically explores managing and leading positive and responsible change within work organisations. While the focus is on planned approaches to changes, you will also develop an appreciation of emergent change through exploration of a range of concepts, models, and theoretical frameworks. You will compare types of change and processes to participatory change and stakeholder inclusion and engagement. You will also consider impacts of change on individuals and issues of resilience and sustainability.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through lectures, interactive seminars, tutor guidance, feedback, and independent directed and self-directed learning. Importantly, you will also learn at work, through reflecting on your experiences and applying your knowledge from the module to your practice in the workplace. The interactive seminars will introduce you to theories and concepts and allow you to discuss with the tutors and your peers (via the module discussion board and Blackboard Collaborate) how these relate to your own work based experiences and practice. The workplace provides an opportunity for you to put your own knowledge and skills into practice and review your learning with your manager/mentor and your guidance tutor.

Your learning is supported by a Teaching and Learning Plan, offering guidance on reading to prepare for the online interactive workshops and help with the completion of the assessment. Within this plan there are also suggested learning activities, which guide you in your independent learning. These activities allow you to reflect and evaluate your knowledge and skills in this area.

You will also be given assignments and projects, which will support your learning by providing an experientially based opportunity to apply your learning and evaluate your own practice in this area. This will be done through assessment components involving a discussion Board Participation, a Reflective Written Account, and an individual written report.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The Teaching and Learning plan will provide several prompts and guidance to support you academically. Support will also include opportunities to gain feedback from workshop tutors and peers through the online discussion board and Blackboard Collaborate.

Your module is supported by an e-learning portal, which houses all the module learning materials, workshop resources, interactive activities, assessment details and various other support facilities which are provided by the University.

In addition, in order to assist you in developing knowledge, you will have access to the University's library facilities, including extensive electronic resources, eBooks and electronic academic journal articles.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

• MLO5: Demonstrate critical awareness of the impact of sustainable and ethical management practice in managing change in work organisations

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will comprise of 3 components which will assess Module Learning Outcomes MLO1-MLO5 inclusive. These include:

Component 1: A formative assessment involving Discussion Board participation (400 words) (weightage 10%)

Component 2: A formative assessment involving a reflective written account (600 words) relating to experiencing change in an organisation (weightage 10%)

Component 3: A summative assessment involving an individual written report (3000 words) on change management practice based on a case organisation (weightage 80%)


The criteria for each assessment component will be provided to students to enable them to understand what is expected in each assessment component and how they will be assessed for their performance.

Module abstract

This module will support you to develop your understanding of a perennial issue for leaders and managers in organisations: anticipating and responding to change. By developing your understanding of a range of theories and exploring types of change and processes for managing planned and emergent change, you will deepen your appreciation of the role of change agents in leading and supporting individuals and teams through transition. The module supports you to draw on your own experiences allowing you to reflect and evaluate your own effectiveness in this area and to link theory and practice in the contexts in which you work.
