Module abstract

The title of this module reflects the key aspect of your role as a SENDCo and the role of professional development in educational practice. This module is intended to give you as a professional working within education a background to the role and responsibilities of the SEN(D)Co as a co-ordinator of resources and multi-professional support for the children and young people in their care. The module will present you with the opportunity to critically review your skills and understanding of the contribution made by different stakeholders with their experience and expertise of working with learners presenting with signs of common physical, sensory, emotional, social and learning impairments. Drawing upon your own experience and that of others, you will be supported to develop networks and supportive relationships appropriate to the needs of the children in your care. You will develop an action plan for your own professional development to stay up to date with changes in the sector which may include policy, procedures and education specific developments. Supporting your ideas with theory and research, you will develop strategies that might be employed to support children who have various learning needs. Various theories that underpin education practice like human growth and development, team dynamics and transitions will provide you with the confidence to work with different stakeholders to ensure positive experiences for children and young people with SEND. Emphasis will be laid on the need for continuous professional development for yourself and the colleagues you lead in your organisation. You will identify challenges to working with various stakeholders and how they can be addressed in order to ensure positive outcomes for learners and their families.
