What will I learn on this module?
You will learn about typical management practice and activity necessary at the early stages of construction engineering projects. There is a strong emphasis on the key pre-construction aspects of such projects in this module. Themes can include: the planning for and management of construction engineering project level organisations and resources; the use of construction engineering production information, the management of design during the construction process, and the role that digital engineering solutions, popularly known as Building Information Modelling (BIM) have in this process; construction engineering project planning processes; production of construction engineering solutions for specific project challenges.
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through a combination of lectures, online resources, and some small group seminars. Your learning will also be facilitated through a combination of academic staff guided independent learning activities (e.g. directed reading), and student identified independent learning activities. The use of past or available real-life construction case studies may also be used to enhance learning activities. Lectures and seminars will be used to support effective transmission of information and may be delivered via a combination of face-to-face ‘live’ sessions or the use of digitally pre-recorded sessions or live video webcasts. All ‘live’ teaching lecture sessions will be captured and made available to you from the University’s virtual learning environment (VLE).
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Support will include academic staff feedback during seminars and following formative assessment tasks. The academic staff member will place announcements on the VLE that will direct you to suitable learning opportunities and activities that will enhance your understanding.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. The reading list for this module can be found at: http://readinglists.northumbria.ac.uk
(Reading List service online guide for academic staff this containing contact details for the Reading List team – http://library.northumbria.ac.uk/readinglists)
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
1. You will be expected to be able to analyse the major processes involved in construction engineering operations and appraise the construction engineering workplace in terms of challenges to production.
2. You will be able to demonstrate an understanding of digital engineering (BIM) as a process, which can improve the delivery of construction engineering projects.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
You will develop key professional skills valued by employers by:
3. Developing proposals for efficient temporary facilities in order to undertake effective construction engineering operations.
4. Producing effective planning solutions to the challenges of construction engineering projects, considering issues such as, sequence, methodology and strategy.
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
5. You will be able to apply disciplinary knowledge to complex problems of practice and identify appropriate solutions.
How will I be assessed?
Formative Assessment
Formative assessment will be used to allow you to build confidence and highlight any misunderstandings you may have of the theoretical and professional concepts presented in the module. Additional formative feedback shall be delivered to you verbally by academic staff during formally-scheduled teaching and individual or group activity-based sessions to help you learn and prepare you for the submission of your summative assessment.
Summative Assessment
Summative assessment will be by one piece of coursework that will assess your ability to satisfy all the module learning outcomes. You will use the University’s VLE to submit your coursework digitally and will receive your feedback using appropriate digital feedback tools.

Module abstract
This module focuses on pre-construction aspects of construction engineering projects. Key content in ‘Construction Project Management and Digital Engineering (BIM) 1’ includes the planning of work before execution, and considers how such plans are formulated and communicated to stakeholders. Management of construction engineering projects is explored through the use of traditional and contemporary methods, and the potential benefits of newer technology and working practices are evaluated. This learning will equip you with knowledge and skills highly valued by employers that will enable you to help deliver effective construction engineering projects in future practice. The module has been designed to satisfy several of the programme learning outcomes related to technical knowledge, employability, commercial practice, critical thinking and innovation.
