DA4068 - Global Business Environment and Functions

What will I learn on this module?

This module introduces you to the global forces shaping international business and takes into account the macro business environments of different countries and regions. Broad issues such as globalisation, political systems, major world economies, the formation of trade blocks and the regulation of international trade and finance are considered. Where appropriate, module explores macro-economic theory. This module introduces you to the world of economic analysis, providing basic theoretical frameworks for the analysis of individual economic decisions as well as aggregate fluctuations in output, prices and employment. It covers selected topics in both micro and macro-economics. The module will also help you to develop an understanding of the external business environment, in terms of institutions, markets, industries and organisations. During the course of the module, you will have an opportunity to research and analyse contemporary cases that illustrate theory and concepts.

In addition, the module explores the internal functions of an organisation from silos to an integrated approach in order to explore the synergies of cross-functional teams and matrix organisational structures within the contemporary global business environment. Functions explored in detail include Accounting and Finance, Sales and Marketing, Operations, Human Resource Management, Information Technology and Information Systems. This module introduces the business functions and forms a holistic foundation in which to ground the digital marketing functions covered in further study at Stages 2 and 3.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through workshops, tutor guidance, feedback, and independent directed and self-directed learning. Importantly, you will also learn at work, through reflecting on your experiences and applying your knowledge from the module to your practice in the workplace. The workshops will introduce you to theories and concepts and allow you to discuss with the tutors and your peers how these relate to your own work based experiences and practice. The workplace provides an opportunity for you to put your own knowledge and skills into practice and review your learning with your manager/mentor and your guidance tutor.

Your learning is supported by a Teaching and Learning Plan, offering guidance on reading to prepare for workshops and help with the completion of the assessment. Within this plan, there are also suggested learning activities, which guide you in your independent learning. These activities allow you to reflect and evaluate your knowledge and skills and in this area.

You will also be given work-based assignments and projects, which will support your learning by providing an experientially based opportunity to apply your learning and evaluate your own practice in this area.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The Teaching and Learning plan will provide a number of prompts and guidance to support you academically. Support will also include opportunities to gain feedback from workshop tutors, guidance tutors and peers.


Your module is also supported by an e-learning portal, which houses all the module learning materials, workshop resources, interactive activities, assessment details and various other support facilities which are provided by the University.

In addition, in order to assist you in developing knowledge, you will have access to the University’s library facilities, including extensive electronic resources, eBooks and electronic academic journal articles.

How will I be assessed?

Summative assessment:

There are two assignments for this Module:

Assignment One (50%):
Computer based Exam
60 questions, 90 minutes with a maximum of three attempts and the highest score counting for the module grade (Addressing MLO1, MLO2, MLO3, MLO4).

Assignment Two (50%):
Summative assessment comprises an individual assignment report (3,000 words): Analyse the contribution of each business function, separately and collectively, towards the performance of your own (or a chosen) organisation, and produce recommendations for future improvements in one functional area (Addressing MLO1, MLO2, MLO3 and MLO4)

Module abstract

This module will develop your understanding of the complexities of a business organisation, the global environment in which it operates and the main business functional areas, which typically support their operation. You will use research texts and case studies to explore how business organisations develop an integrated approach to their central functions of Finance, Operations, Marketing and Human Resource Management in a dynamic operating environment. You will be develop a broad understanding of the various managerial tools, which are available to support, maintain and evaluate the effective operations of an organisation, and consider the importance of satisfying the needs of shareholders and other stakeholders. This will involve exploring the implications of Corporate Social Responsibility, considering its relevance to today’s society. The module provides an essential foundation to your future learning and professional practice in business and management.
