What will I learn on this module?
On this semester 2 level 6 module you will explore a variety of approaches to support effective teaching, learning and assessment methods in a professional practice context. With an emphasis on multi professional and interprofessional working, it will support you to develop a detailed understanding of how to plan, deliver and evaluate high quality, inclusive learning opportunities. You will practice locating, evaluating and applying evidence related to teaching, learning and assessment in the context appropriate to nursing practice.
You will further develop a critical understanding of the value of reflection and interpersonal skills conducive to the learning environment and context. This will include a critical analysis of the barriers and enablers to learning. A reflexive approach will help you collaborate effectively, and to support a learning community within a multi-cultural learning environment. An important part of consolidating teaching and learning knowledge is to share your knowledge through various methods, techniques and technologies. This teaching and learning module will explore theories related to communicating effectively to provide feedback to feedforward, through models such as mentoring, supervision and coaching. Personal narratives around learning and teaching will be used to share lived experiences, while simulated role play with offer formative opportunities to deliver teaching and assessment opportunities.
You will be assessed using both formative and summative assessments. The formative assessment will be in the form of a peer presentation outlining the focus of your educational initiative using an action learning set format. The module will culminate in a summative assessment where you will submit a short video (up to 20 minutes) of a teaching session you have prepared and delivered. Afterwards you will submit a videoed critical reflection of how you felt developing and delivering the session, including any challenges you experienced.

How will I learn on this module?
The module will employ a blended design approach. This will be an interactive, interesting and motivating learning experience which will help you gain confidence and competence in planning and delivering education in your practice area. In-country teaching blocks will offer face-to-face teaching for the semester; teaching will also be undertaken online. Approaches will include, directed learning activities to support you in preparing for the module delivery and embedding your learning into the practice context. Key sessions will introduce you to seminal theoretical perspectives on learning, teaching and assessment. Seminar activity using a case-based learning approach will help construct your learning with an emphasis on creative problem solving, teamwork and inclusivity. This will include collaborative learning from your peers during sessions, encouraging you to co-reflect and develop innovative educational approaches.
The strategies adopted during sessions will include provision of theory, interactive discussions, debates and a process of critical reflection and feedback to capture and scaffold your learning. You will also undertake individual and small group activities. Enquiry-based learning will also be utilised to develop your knowledge and skills around teaching, learning and assessment in your practice areas.
You will be assessed using both formative and summative assessments which are defined below.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
You will be supported by highly experienced teachers who are nurses and research active. You will obtain support from face-to-face and online dialogue with academic staff and peers. This will include opportunities to apply your developing educational skills, engage in the processes of critical reflection and feedback to capture and scaffold your learning. You will utilise peer support during the directed study and independent study periods on the module.
You will have access to the University’s electronic resources to support the development of academic skills; this is aimed at improving your critical thinking and writing with regards to teaching and learning. The resources include e-books, e-journals and an array of databases and media outputs. Northumbria University’s state-of-the-art eLearning platform Blackboard Ultra will be used for this module. This will give you access to module teaching materials and an electronic full text reading list. All module materials will be available for students via this platform. Synchronous online face to face teaching and tutorials will be delivered via Blackboard Collaborate, offering an opportunity for your lecturers and peers to engage with you in interactive ways. Campus based sessions will critically explore and apply a range of teaching and learning theories and strategies and will be supported by directed, group and e-learning activities. This will include use of video activities as well as the use of a range of online learning and teaching technologies and applications. You will be encouraged to engage in peer support throughout the module and this will further maximise learning within a blended programme design.
You will have membership of the Northumbria University Library (https://library.northumbria.ac.uk/home) that includes a 24/7 service catering for all your learning needs. Library membership will also give you access to academic skills development packages, accessed on-line, called Skills Plus (https://library.northumbria.ac.uk/develop-learning-skills/learning-skills ). In addition, you can access Kaplan library and student support services locally.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

How will I be assessed?
Formative assessment:
You will prepare your lesson plan and share it with a smaller group, using an action learning set format. All students need to share their work and give feedback to peers. . (MLOs 1,2,3,4,)
This preparation will then support the Summative assessment processes.
Summative Assessment (Weighting: 100%):
You will submit a short video (up to 20 minutes) of a teaching session you have prepared and delivered. Afterwards you need to submit a videoed critical reflection of how you felt developing and delivering the session, including any challenges you experienced.

Module abstract
This module will help you to develop your knowledge and skills in developing teaching and learning strategies in your practice. During the course of this module, you will work in partnership with your academic tutor and peers to design, plan and evaluate effective inclusive teaching and learning, incorporating various assessment strategies.. By the end of the module, you will be able to produce and deliver a teaching session for your chosen audience. This will incorporate a range of teaching and learning theories and techniques explored throughout the module. You will be able to be reflexive on the approach and methods you use in your teaching and assessment practice.
