DA5015 - Developing Evidence Informed Operating Department Practice

On this module, you will learn by attending seminars and workshops hosted on Coach Lane Campus. The strategies adopted during workshops will include presentations of your own work and that of your peer group, enquiry-based learning and problem- based learning, journal clubs and group work. Members of the module team will facilitate the workshops.

You will learn by preparing to attend workshops. This preparatory work will be achieved by engaging in Independent Study. The materials will include interactive learning packages, workbooks and media outputs. The Module Team will provide advice on how and when to engage in your Tutor Guided Independent Study.

On this module you will learn by reading, this is vital for your academic and clinical development. Reading will provide you with technical information to enhance the evidence base for your clinical practice. Reading is also necessary for you to appraise the merits of a variety of writing styles; adopting the strongest and best of the characteristics in your own work to demonstrate progression in your scholarship.

You will be engaging in Student Independent Learning. You will be able to choose what you would like to study in more detail. You can spend time preparing for your module assessment and /or generating evidence for your clinical practice placement. This written assignment will be a Literature Review (2500 Words). You will critically discuss key literature in terms of theory, content and methodology in relation to a current perioperative issue of your choosing.

The Module Team will be assessing you. All assessments help motivate learning.

You will obtain support from face to face dialogue with academic staff during seminars and workshops. You will utilise peer support during the directed and independent parts of the module. You will be provided with a group tutorial to support your summative assessment; this will be part of a seminar. You will also be supported via the modules online supported learning (OSL) systems in addition to face-to-face teaching and group work activities and discussion. You will be able to contact the module team in person, by email or phone and through the Blackboard Ultra. Skills Plus, the University Library’s collection of online learning materials on Blackboard Ultra can be used to support the development of your academic skills. Formative Assessment
The aims and outcomes of the formative assessments are to assist you to prepare for your summative assessment. During engagement with the module, seminars and workshops there will be verbal feedback about your achievement of the module learning outcomes from the module team and your peers.
There will also be opportunity for verbal feedforward during the assessment preparation seminar.
All activities will help you to develop your thinking and writing skills in preparation for your summative assessment.

Summative Assessment

This written assignment will be a Literature Review (3000 Words). You will critically discuss key literature in terms of theory, content and methodology in relation to a current perioperative issue of your choosing.

You will use a wide range of contemporary academic literature and research to support your text.

As an apprentice ODP, this module will introduce you to the scope of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) and encourage you to engage with research evidence that informs clinical practice. It will revisit the nature of research evidence and the evidence hierarchy introduced in the Theory Module 1: Introduction to Perioperative Evidence Based Practice. You will explore and critique, research and other evidence which informs clinical practice and decision-making and develop an understanding and appreciation of how you can evaluate evidence relating to your own specific perioperative practice. The application of enquiry and evidence within practice will be developed for use within the practice setting. Reflection on experiences will enable you to apply and critique, the use of evidence in different practice contexts. In addition, you will explore barriers to the implementation of EBP and the use of clinical audit and reflection as a process to consolidate knowledge and develop skills that can be used to function effectively as a registered Operating Department Practitioner.
