What will I learn on this module?
The?BSc (Hons)?Operating Department Practice Integrated Degree Apprenticeship?programme?work-based route?aims to?ensure that students are able to demonstrate compassionate, safe, evidence-based and effective patient care, across the core areas of practice, at point of successful completion of the award?(CODP, 2018). As an Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) Skills 2: Principles of Perioperative Practice will build on the concept of communication and safe and effective practice which you have been introduced in the previous skills module. You will further develop your communication and clinical skills relevant to your practice placement experiences. You will continue to learn a range of skills that are necessary for safe, effective and professional practice. You will have the opportunity to participate in simulated education utilising a range of specialist technology e.g. laparoscopic trainer and laparoscopic equipment located in the clinical skills centre equipment and taught by experts. This content will be taught and facilitated by a specialist module team of lecturers in perioperative practice.
You will consider and develop your skills, acting with integrity, applying the principles of the Health and Care Professions Council’s (HCPC) Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics (HCPC 2016). You will demonstrate your ability to practise in a holistic, individualised, person centred, non-judgemental, caring and sensitive manner, acknowledging the diverse needs of a contemporary society. You will continue to develop your understanding of team working and its importance in operating department practice. You will learn about the importance of person centred care and effective communication skills. These learning opportunities will continue to help you gather evidence of your abilities and confidence and will inform your attainment of communication and safe and effective practice as identified as part 1 in your Ongoing Record of Achievement (ORA).
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through a variety of methods, which will include Online Supported Learning (OSL), and through engagement with a simulated practice environment. Learning will be supplemented by relevant resources and training packages, which will include access to the department’s specialist Skills4Practice website: https://www.s4pwebsite.com/
Engagement in group workshops will encourage you to work collaboratively with peers to build your knowledge and understanding. This will further enhance your understanding and skills of the task-work component of teamwork and reflects the realities of delivering effective care for people of all ages in the perioperative setting.
The module will be delivered using BlackBoard Ultra as well as face-to-face practical sessions, underpinned by online learning resources. The focus of learning will be on rehearsal of perioperative skills to build proficiency, develop understanding and enhance competence.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
Throughout the module, you will be supported by experienced academic staff from a range of specialist backgrounds within the healthcare professions. The academic staff involved in delivering this module will provide guidance and academic coaching to ensure you confidently engage with the requirements of this module. You will be provided with the opportunity to prepare for your assessment during the workshops and seminars during the module delivery. You will also be provided with structured feedback and feedforward on completion of formative assessment activities. Your peers are also a key support mechanism within this module. Many activities undertaken within workshop and seminar sessions are aimed at facilitating peer discussion and learning from each other.
Additional study support is available from Ask 4 Help (on-line or face-to-face staff support) situated at Student Central at each campus. 1. Explain the principles of operating department practice during all phases of perioperative related care utilising the evidence base underpinning practice.

2. Demonstrate an ability to maintain asepsis in preparing and participating in perioperative interventions.
3. Outline & demonstrate measures to ensure Service User and staff safety
4. You will develop a range of theraputic intervention skills which will enable you to support service users in order to deliver safe and effective practice.

You will be provided with peer and academic led debrief following a personal reflection on a communication skill performed in practice.

Module abstract
Within this second skills module you will continue to develop the skills required to provide safe and effective professional practice. Your sessions will continue to focus on the rehearsal of a range of skills that support your learning in practice. You will be provided with opportunities to participate in simulated learning utilising a range of specialist technology. Emphasis will be given to the process of reflection and its contribution in your learning. Particular focus on communication skills will explore their importance in perioperative interventions for safe and effective professional practice. As you progress through the module you will learn how to reflect on your own performance, use feedback and illustrate your development and growing confidence in your Ongoing Record of Achievement (ORA).
