What will I learn on this module?

In this Introduction to Fashion Design and Marketing module, you will be introduced to historical and contemporary influences in fashion design, providing the foundation to understand how fashion is traditionally produced, circulated, and consumed. You will also explore some of the principal theoretical approaches to fashion marketing, equipping you with the tools to analyse its operation in the fashion industry.
By studying contemporary design influences, you will learn the history of fashion through various socio-cultural, political, and economic influences. You will discover the roots of fashion and how it has evolved over time, giving you a better understanding of this constantly changing and exciting industry. This module will introduce you to why and how styles have changed and how trends have emerged through key historical events and figures.
Through the introduction to fashion marketing, you will learn basic marketing concepts, principles, theories and techniques. This module will introduce you to the marketing mix and how fashion businesses analyse, segment and target markets.
Through this module, you will learn to be independent, conduct individual study and work collaboratively to formulate ideas and articulate and present the subject confidently. You will also reflect on what you have learned and how this has impacted your design principles at the start of your Fashion Design and Marketing student journey.

How will I learn on this module?

This module combines fashion design and marketing theory with workshops and collaborative group work to contextualise learning. You will be encouraged to engage in induction activities to start to build a positive community or practice with your peers. You will be expected to actively participate in your learning by engaging in dynamic practical studio sessions and guided independent learning. Rather than compartmentalising theory and practice, this module will combine lectures and seminars with workshops. This approach aims to help you make clear links between theory and practice by directly applying what you learn and discuss in studio lectures and seminars to interactive demonstrations, practical work or collaborative projects, supporting you to develop your research, academic and intellectual skills in an experiential learning environment.

You will be introduced to the module by academic staff who will share their research, knowledge, and experience. These contextual sessions will form the start of a seminar or workshop, where you will be encouraged to discuss and analyse what you have learned. This module will introduce you to the University Library as a valuable resource for both research and to support academic writing skills.

You will create both individual and group work for assessment. Individually, you will discuss, analyse, and creatively present an area that has sparked your interest in the contemporary design influences explored in the module. You will be introduced to Adobe InDesign (or relevant software) to start developing your graphic design, layout, and presentation skills to create a poster presentation. You will make links to an area of personal interest and how this may shape your future practice. Using this foundation of knowledge, you will actively contribute to a group project, using a framework of marketing theory to work collaboratively to propose a relevant fashion marketing enterprise.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Your module tutors will be your main source of support for your academic development. Practical studio workshops will integrate lectures, seminar discussions and tutorials, to help you make clear links between theory and practice. Your tutors will provide you with the support you need to pass and succeed in each module.

At the outset of your module, you will receive a module briefing that will explain all learning outcomes and requirements. Crucially, it will also include a detailed timetable explaining the planned delivery of the module, workshops, and opportunities for support, including tutorials. You will meet your module tutors on a weekly basis.

During your modules, you will be expected to present work for feedback through group discussion with your peers, tutors, external collaborators, or stakeholders. You will also receive more individualised tutorial feedback prior to your submission to help improve your work.
In addition to your module tutors, you will be supported by various others and university services:

• The Faculty provides a wide range of technical expertise to support your study. Technicians aligned with your modules will be able to provide technical instruction and demonstration of equipment and software required to complete your project work.
• Library staff will provide induction sessions to introduce you to essential study skills, IT skills and information retrieval skills.
• On live projects with external collaborators (or stakeholders), you may receive specific project feedback and professional career advice.
• Visiting lecturers and professionals will give you greater contextual awareness and inspire you.
• Academic Language Skills modules are available to help students at the Northumbria Campuses whose first language is not English or who have no experience studying in English in the UK.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Recall and explain contextual issues, historical movements and design perspectives that shape design practice.

2. Identify and apply fashion marketing theories and concepts in the presentation of individual and/or collaborative project outputs.

3. Demonstrate intellect and self-reflection by identifying areas of personal interest to discuss in relation to design principles and related debates in fashion marketing.

4. Actively engage in induction activities, professional practice lectures, seminars, workshops, and trips.

How will I be assessed?

Formative Assessment
You will have the opportunity of continuous formative assessment through verbal feedback in studio sessions, self-assessment, and peer reviews.
Formative assessment will indicate the level at which you are currently achieving the relevant MLOs and offer an opportunity to discuss progress and ensure the right support is in place to achieve your goals. Formative assessment allows you to apply the feedback to your existing work and improve your competencies before your final summative assessment.
Summative Assessment
During the assessment period in weeks 9 and 10 of this module, you will present and submit work for summative assessment. This module has two components.

Component 1:
Component 1: 50% Collaborative Marketing Project
MLOs 2, 4, 5
Assessment of this component will be via a group project and individual reflection, evidencing your contribution to the collective output.
Component 2: 50% CDI Presentation
MLOs 1, 3, 4
This submission will be a creative poster presentation including 800-1000 words and a reference list (using Harvard Referencing).

Module abstract

This dynamic module combines lectures and seminars with creative workshops to contextualise learning through individual and collaborative projects. You will be introduced to fashion design, marketing theory, and contemporary design influences. Academic staff will guide you through the module and share their knowledge and experience. You'll engage in induction activities, lectures, seminars, and workshops to develop your research skills alongside guided independent learning. You'll create individual and group work for assessment. You will discuss and creatively present an area that has sparked your interest in the contemporary design influences explored in the module. You will also work on a collaborative project using a framework of marketing theory to pitch a fashion enterprise. As your first module at Level 4, induction activities will support you in building a positive community with your peers.
