Introduction to Sport Performance Analysis
This course is an open Continuing Professional Development course. In order to book, please follow the booking link, or if not available, fill out the enquiry form and a member of staff will be in touch with you shortly.
This Certificate is aimed at everyone who wants to be able to improve sports performance through data analysis. You’ll learn what data can be gathered, how to interpret it, how to apply it to the coaching and training process, and how to make use of it in competitions.
Many teams are looking for evidence-based interventions that help improve efficiency of performance while reducing the risk of injury. So it makes perfect sense that sport performance analysis is increasingly in demand.
The course is particularly relevant for coaches at Level 1-2 in sports such as soccer, rugby, basketball and hockey, as well as teachers of PE in secondary schools. The course is also very appropriate for sport coaching students and others who might progress to further training and become accredited sports performance analysts.
Upon registering for the course, you’ll receive log-in details which will give you 6-months access to the website, where you can study, via distance learning, at times that suit your existing commitments. You’ll receive extensive support including an online Q&A session with tutors. At no point is there any requirement to attend the University’s campus in Newcastle.

There are no specific entry requirements.
Course participants will learn:
1. What is Performance Analysis and how it is utilised in a sporting context.
2. What information is provided by Performance Analysis and how it is interpreted.
3. The application of Performance Analysis to the coaching process and the implications for training and competition.
The course can provide the logical progression to an accredited course for those wishing to further develop their knowledge, application and potential to achieve a career as a sport performance analyst.
I- SPA is developed by Dr Angela Hibbs and Marc Briggs.
Dr Angela Hibbs
Dr Angela Hibbs is an Assistant Professor at Northumbria University in Sports Biomechanics and Sports Performance Analysis. Angela is also the Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Lead at Northumbria University. Previously Angela worked in the applied elite sport environment working at both the Australian Institute of Sport and the English Institute of Sport providing performance analysis support to individual and team sports at the elite level.
Marc Briggs
Dr Marc Briggs is Head of Subject (Sport & Exercise) within the Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation. Marc's teaching interests lying mainly within sports nutrition, sports physiology and the application of sports science to coaching. Marc contributes to teaching at all undergraduate and postgraduate levels delivering lectures, seminars, practicals and laboratory workshops across a wide range of modules.
