Dr Benoit Huard

Assistant Professor

Department: Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Engineering

I am an Assistant Professor and Programme Leader for the MSc in Mathematics at Northumbria University.

After completing a PhD in mathematical physics at the University of Montreal in 2010, I was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the FQRNT (government of Quebec) to undertake research on the theory of wave interactions in multidimensional systems within the group of Geometry and Mathematical Physics at Loughborough University. I joined Northumbria University as a Research Fellow in November 2012 and study nonlinear dynamics, modelling and applications in biological systems.

I am an ordinary member of the London Mathematical Society and of the European Society of Mathematical Biology, and a fellow of Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.

An important part of our current work concerns the characterisation of periodic cycles in the glucose-insulin regulation and describing pathways to restoring them. In particular, it has been shown that delays implied by biological synthesis processes are essential to generating healthy rhythms which are crucial in the prevention of complications such as diabetes.

I am also interested in entrainment and synchronisation in various biological systems, as well as in statistical methods for parameter inference.

I supervise projects about geometric methods in differential equations and in the mathematical modelling of biological processes.
