Leon Mayfield is Chief Financial Officer at Northumbria University.

As Chief Financial Officer, Leon leads the University's finance, commercial, procurement, faculty operations, and campus teams.

He has overall responsibility for all aspects of the University’s financial performance and capacity. He also has strategic responsibility for the maintenance and development of the University's campuses.  Together, the long-term sustainability of the University’s finances and the development of the estate are key enablers of the University’s strategic ambitions. 

Leon provides strategic leadership (long term financial strategy for the University, financial control and financial performance, commercial development, procurement and purchasing) to ensure compliance, excellent financial reporting and governance and an appropriate financial control environment

Leon works with the University Executive to ensure that the University’s interests are represented nationally and locally. Leon is also key to encouraging and enabling the development of commercial products and services to support the diversification of our income. He optimises University resources for operations and investment ensuring transparency, consistency, and flexibility.

Leon works closely with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chief Strategy Officer on co-leading the University’s annual planning and resourcing process.

Having trained with a Big 4 Firm providing professional services to the government and public sectors, Leon spent eight years focused on delivering various work across the higher education sector.  Most recently Leon has held leadership roles across finance, digital, technology, data, insight and change in the charity sector.

Leon has an economics degree and is a chartered accountant.
